There's no way to really know since Howard always exaggerates and SirusXM doesn't release numbers. But we can look at estimates done by outside groups:

In January 2014, Macquarie surveyed 800 SiriusXM subscribers and found that while SiriusXM is available on the go for premium subscribers via Web and mobile apps, 84 percent of listening takes place in cars. Of the respondents, 12 percent said they listen to Stern—the equivalent of about 3.2 million listeners. < (Article from Bloomberg Business http://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...m-contract-doubts-come-amid-upheaval-in-radio )

Even though it's a random sample - it's the same method used by Nielsen for TV ratings used by the industry.

For comparison's sake - 3.2 million listeners is still a lot. Here's what the late night shows did during the last big ratings period, in February:

In total viewers for the Jan. 29-Feb. 25 sweep, “Tonight Show” led with an average nightly audience of 3.882 million viewers, followed by “Late Show” (2.847 million) and “Kimmel” (2.763 million). <

Not really a fair comparison because those shows are on "terrestrial" (free) TV. The viewers for basic "pay" cable shows are even lower... for example the biggest talk show on cable last night was Bill O'Riley - with 1.9m viewers. But Fox always gets huge numbers. Anderson Cooper only had 409k total viewers - MSNBC had 450k.

Also worth pointing out that the number of listeners isn't the end-all, be-all for SirusXM. It's the number of subscribers that matters most. And right now they're closing in on 30 million. Up from 600k 10 years ago when Howard first signed. Would that have happened without Howard? Probably not. And the proof is that he was important enough for Sirus to resign once. Question is if they think he's still important enough to sign again. Guess we'll have an answer in a few months.

As unlikeable as Stern is to many here it's undeniable he played a role in the growth of the medium.
There were many other reasons that sat. radio has grown and continues to be viable (for now at least) but someone of Stern's stature at the time going to satellite and getting so many to follow, did play a small part in changing the course of the industry.

Yup, because Howard is the reason people buy a new car, which totally gins up the subscription numbers...

Never forget: Howard was the merger's biggest cheerleader, because he'd missed out on his $75 million new subscriber bonus for 2007, and knew it would be no different for 2008, 2009 or 2010 unless something big and beyond his influence happened. (Although he lied at the time and claimed he had no financial personal interest in seeing the two companies merge.)

What I'd like to know is: When did those 800 subscribers who were surveyed about Howard sign up for Sirius? I'm guessing that the 12 percent who said they listen to Howard all signed up between 2005 and 2006.

His bonus was 25 to 30mil. He pushed for it HARD because his second contract w/ SXM was NOTHING like the first one-which was a one off. But your last part was a
    VERY good point.
