I realize monthly payments are less when you lease instead of buy.

Then I see people with these great new leased cars who limit what they do, where they go, and where they will work because they are worried about going over on the mileage.

I know someone that has a crappy job fairly close to home and he can barely afford the lease. There is a potential better job opportunity he can explore, but he doesn't want to drive any further than he does now because he is scared of the potential overage. I didn't understand why he just didn't get something maybe a year or two older and buy that for about the same monthly payment. Then he could drive it wherever he wanted without repercussions.

    40 k Buick Regal Turbo.
2013,last yr for the 270hp motor.
    factory 20's,Brembo brakes,Recaro seats.

leasing isn't for everybody.my wife has been at her job 20 yrs. which is close by.
has never gone over the miles, never even worn out a set of tires.
    every 3 yrs. she leases a car/12 k miles a year.always under warranty.

I should clarify that the situations I don't get are the ones where it is the only car and it becomes a hindrance if you have to think about it every time you need to do something. She uses it primarily for local commuting and because you are a multi-car family you don't have to rely on her car if you are going on a long trip.

its pretty fast, but bad on gas, lucky to get 20 mpg.

400 a month,on a buy the payment for 3 yrs. would have been huge.

if you own your own business, or small second business, you can deduct the costs associated with the lease including the payments while your business assigns the car to you as a company asset. if you go over on the mileage you didn't negotiate the commercial lease correctly (commercial leases are very different from personal leases) but even so the overage charges are a deduction to your company (or to you as an unreimbursed business expense).

personally i don't believe anyone should lease if they can't use the deduction because you don't get the use of the car that you should.

for her the car is an expense, and not a need as she does not drive for work. she also cannot drive the car on a vacation trip: she's not driving from NYC to Miami in that.

it depends upon why you want it. I used to work with a guy who leased a 2 door BMW because everyone else wanted SUVs and the dealer was giving great rates and he wanted to be able to cruise around NJ on weekends in a nice car. Weekdays he commuted by train or bus to work.

its kind of like renting jewelry to show off at the clubs.

the car makes her happy and thats what matters to me.
we wouldn't even drive that far if we owned it,we would be on a plane.we may drive up to Vegas in it this year.
after 5 months the car just turned 3k miles.
