Actor Gunnar Hansen, best known for his playing the outcast cannibal, Leatherface in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has died at age 68.

The Icelandic born American actor died on Saturday after suffering from pancreatic cancer.

According to his agent, Mike Eisenstadt, Hansen died at his home in Maine, where he lived for 40 years.

Hansen had moved to Maine from Reykjavik at the age of five with his family. They then re-located to Texas, where he attended high-school and university. He secured the part just after finishing graduate school, after he heard it was being filmed in Austin.

The cult horror film saw Hansen playing a murderous outcast, where he wore a gruesome mask made of human skin from his victims.

The 1973 film was his first success, and led him to go on to play a plethora of roles in other horror based films up to 2013, with the 3D remake of the original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The remake also included Marilyn Burns, another original cast member, who first played Sally Hardesty.

His other roles included Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers in 1988, a comedy horror, where he plays “The Master”. In Campfire Tales in 1991, a film based on four horror stories, he played one of the story tellers.

He even played the role of the captain in an Icelandic film, Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre in 2009.

Mosquito a science-fiction film from 1995 saw him play the role of bank-robbing Earl that payed homage to the 1950s horror films with alien ships and giant mosquitos.

At his time of death, Hansen was working on a film called Death House, which he was writing and producing. It was scheduled to come out next year.

After starring in the 1974 horror film, he later wrote a book, Chain Saw Confidential, detailing from behind the scenes how the film was made.

Hansen leaves behind him, his partner of 13 years Betty Tower.

    My condolences to the saw...

But for chainsaw horror movies we would not have commercials like this.

To this day, I've still never seen that movie from start to finish, just bits and pieces through the years. But I was never a fan of those over the top horror movies anyways, especially the ones coming out every 5 minutes in the 80's.

I did like Student Bodies though:

I met him a couple of years ago. Ironically it was at a Metallica concert. They were hosting a festival and each band member had a tent that had a theme based on their hobbies. Their guitarist Kirk Hammett had a horror themed tent because he has a massive collection of movie memorabilia.

A the end of the tent in walked Gunnar to take photos and sign autographs. Most people didn't recognize him because they were there for a concert so I went up to him and we chatted. Really nice soft spoken guy. The black and white photo at the top of this thread is the picture he signed to me.

If you ever watch the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre on DVD watch it with the audio commentary. Gunnar had some interesting stories about filming that movie which sounds like it was Hell to shoot. Especially the final dinner scene.

That's a shame. Heard from a lot of people that he was a really good guy.

And holy shit is Texas Chainsaw a relentless film. The last half-hour is Leatherface chasing poor Marilyn Burns (also recently deceased, I believe) all over the place, with no let-up. I miss those kinds of films where the filmmakers made up for zero budgets with ingenuity and imagination.
