EXCLUSIVE: David Letterman wants Jay Leno to steal Jimmy Fallon's 'Tonight Show' thunder
[/h][h=2]Letterman, longtime host of CBS' 'Late Show' and late-night talk show rival of Leno, has been trying to rebuild the relationship with the recently retired 'Tonight Show' host to get him on his show for a ratings boost.[/h]Leno and Letterman were once close pals who had a famous falling out when Leno won the coveted “Tonight Show†hosting spot. But the rivals recently had a 20 minute phone chat to smooth over any lingering anger, the source said.

This only makes Howard look all the more rediculous now.

Jimmy Kimmel too. I like Jimmy but he comes across as Howard's water carrying lapdog when he bitches about Jay.

Leno's people came to me first with this to have Jay appear on my show knowing that 1 out of every 4 cars in the NYC area is listening to me every morning, but I gave the interview to Dave first. I am that loyal to people. Right, Robin?

    This won't happen.
If Leno wanted to screw anyone over, he would do his own show.

Lorne michaels is connected with a few of nbcs better rated shows. Keep in mind nbc's ratings are the worst. So he probably guaranteed NBC he would bring his next few shows to the network if they let him own late night. Needless to say NBC bent over for him.

Because his viewers were mostly old 50+ and advertisers don't like to spend money on that show. Plus he cost 20 million a year compared to Fallon's show and his young audience which advertisers would rather have even with lower ratings.

Sometimes the ratings don't tell the whole story. It'd demographics that matter when it comes to advertising and profit.

Considering how many of those 30 and under are still out of work and living with parents, I'm not sure how important the 18-30 portion of the target demo is these days

I'm sure Johnny had the best ratings but time has to move on as people move on. Younger audiences. People said Leno was horrible and would never last or get the audience. Took some time but Jay ruled late night.

I think they look at it as even though they are living at home or don't have jobs they still spend more and are more likely to impulse buy or be influenced by ads than the older fixed income or budget constrained older pop.

Also the sellers to younger target group of consumers rhave more money to advertise their products i.e. Apple, Google, Axe Body Spray.....
that's why they and women are coveted
but Fox, which has the opposite strategy, is very successful.
When it comes to network decisions it makes no sense really. Its just salesmen selling to salesmen.
So I agree its a Lorne Michaels move--he is the new alpha dog

I hope this does happen. Letterman has in fact already managed to pull the same move before. He helped Carson stick it up NBC's ass by having him on for his last ever television appearance:

Howard can't make up with Leno ever - this is actually a personal grudge that he holds over Stuttering John. Kathy Lee? Rosie? etc - all fake bits.
