David Letterman invites former late night rival Jay Leno as guest on ‘Late Show’: report
The comedian reportedly wants his former foe to appear on his show before he retires from TV on May 20.

Comedian David Letterman's CBS "Late Show" reportedly has invited his former late-night television arch rival Jay Leno to appear as a guest on the program before Letterman retires from TV in May.

The offer was extended last year, according to a report published on Wednesday by tvinsider.com, which cited unnamed sources.

A guest appearance on Letterman's show by Leno, who stepped down last year as host of NBC's "The Tonight Show," could potentially be a ratings coup for CBS as it looks to capitalize on hoopla surrounding Letterman's May 20 send-off.

CBS and "Late Show" producer Worldwide Pants both declined comment on the report.

Is it too much to hope for a murder-suicide on live TV?

"Ladies and gentleman, my last guest is a former shock jock and is now a part-time shell of his former self, please welcome Howard Stern"

He looks like an old man who can't get out of the chair.

Not surprising. They did that Super Bowl commercial together a few years ago. Letterman has softened over the years. He's made a fine living for himself at CBS. Why hold a grudge over that shit forever? Letterman hated NBC, and he saw for himself how unceremoniously Jay was shoved out by the network even though he was crushing Letterman in the ratings.

It is hard to say NBC was wrong for picking Leno back in 1992 but that must have been soul shattering to Letterman.

Definitely. He had his own show that was very popular. Leno was a frequent guest host. By all rights, Dave was the heir apparent, and maybe Jay could have taken over Late Night. But in reality, Dave was great doing the stuff he did on his show. I'm not sure that would have transferred well to Johnny's audience at The Tonight Show. Current Letterman would have been fine, but not 23 years ago Letterman. He was too brash and cranky. The Tonight Show was always about sucking celebrity ass. Jay was the right man for the job.

Yeah, he was revered. the ass-kissing came in with Leno's run.
Even Rivers as guest host was edgy & Leno as guest host was very different under Carson.
The whole aura was you wanted to get Carson to like you.
With Leno's era, he kissed ass immediately
