Today's 50th anniversary of the release of Love Me Do, the Beatles’ first single, has been soured after an extraordinary attack on Sir George Martin, the celebrated producer, by the controversial American broadcaster Howard Stern.

It was Sir George who took on the Liverpudlians, recording their debut single for Parlophone after their demos had been rejected by rival Decca.
But Stern, the New York “shock jock”, has accused Sir George of “embellishing” his contributions to The Beatles and taking “too much credit” for the band’s success.
“I never heard The Beatles sit there and give George Martin all that credit,” claimed Stern, who has replaced Piers Morgan as a judge on America’s Got Talent. “You don’t hear Paul McCartney carrying on about George Martin. The road is littered with George Martins,” Stern told listeners to his satellite radio show, syndicated across the United States.
“If John Lennon was alive, you wouldn’t even hear from that guy … Why didn’t he turn Gerry and the Pacemakers into The Beatles? Why didn’t he do it with someone else if he was such a genius?”
Critics of Stern say his attack is ill-judged since McCartney has praised the producer for helping to expand the Beatles’ sonic horizons. Sir George, 86, is far too dignified to respond. But his place in the pantheon of popular culture is likely to be rather higher than his crude tormentor’s.

Most Americans don't know who Howard Stern is. I can't imagine any Brits really givng a fuck what some nameless American radio guy thinks.

British people are obsessed with royalty.

Of course they'd be interested in what the King of All Media and King of all Judges thinks.

How would a London newspaper even know this was said? All fingers point toward Buchwald press releasing it hoping to get a bite.

Don is hard at work trying to make Howard look like an international controversial figure.

"Critics of Stern say his attack is ill-judged since McCartney has praised the producer for helping to expand the Beatles’ sonic horizons." What other articles even discussed this story?

Howard's publicity machine (Buchwald) is working overtime trying to do anything to keep Stern relevant. Guaranteed he is hoping some mainstream media in the U.S. pickup on this story since it "supposedly" has some panties in a knot in England:dontknow:

And as always with Howard it's really current, a band that hasn't made music since the sixties and a producer that is 86. Next thing you know Howard will dig up Dr. Ruth and interview her.

i loved the beatles and like howard think their albums changed music forever but i get so annoyed with his over-the-top worship of john lennon. truth is if john was still alive he would be like an elderly justin bieber. early beatles albums were masterpieces but once john went solo the product sucked...:puke:IMO, "imagine" is one of the most treacly, maudlin, pieces of shit to ever become a cultural phenomenon...it ranks up there with "we are the world"...

hey hey now, justin bieber has a handsome face, good teeth and GREAT hair

i agree with you that imagine is a POS. very pre-adolescent in its sentiment. but jealous guy and watching the wheels are great, and i haven't spent much time exploring his solo stuff.

    Too true.

This is a total buchwald plant story. People in America are barely aware of what Howard is saying because he's on Satellite radio. let alone anyone in the UK.

If Howard ever bothered to read ANYTHING about a particular beatles song, he would know that George Martin's contributions to beatles music is usually understated.

And as far as Howard being a good judge of musical talent, i only have two words to say... Enuff Z'nuff.

me too. this martin rant was just more of him lashing out at others getting deserved praise. he can't stand it, especially since no one gives a shit about him anymore. he's trying to sound controversial, but just sounds like an idiot that doesn't know what he's talking about.
