This is one brave Cop. A true Hero.

    • Biker gang experts have said Sunday's deadly shoot-out followed a long-standing territorial dispute
    • The Cossacks Motorcycle Club had angered their rivals, the Bandidos, by affixing 'Texas' to their vests, signalling that they dominated that territory; when the Bandidos told them to remove it, they refused
    • On Tuesday, authorities said one of the biker gangs had planned to meet at the restaurant with other gangs but another group turned up uninvited
    • There was then a disturbance in the parking lot - possible when one biker's foot was run over by a car
    • Gunfire then erupted at the restaurant in Waco, Texas as the two gangs clashed, leaving nine dead, 18 injured and 170 arrested on charges of engaging in organized crime in connection to a capital murder case

Martin Lewis, a 62-year-old retired detective with the San Antonio police department, was arrested during the motorcycle gang related shooting at the Twin Peaks restaurant in Waco, Texas, on Sunday.
A retired police detective was among the 170 bikers rounded up after a fatal gang shootout Sunday at a Waco, Texas “breastaurant.”

Martin Lewis, 62, retired in 2004 from the San Antonio Police Department after 32 years on the force, according to KSAT-TV. Lewis, along with scores of other bikers from at least five different gangs, were at the Twin Peaks bar and grill for a midday meetup when shooting broke out following an altercation in the Central Texas Marketplace parking lot.

Nine people, a members of the Cossacks and Bandidos motorcycle clubs, were killed, 18 others were injured and 170 bikers were busted on charges of engaging in organized crime.

It’s unclear with which club Lewis is associated.

A public works department employee with the city of Austin, some 100 miles south of Waco, was also among those rounded up and held at the Mclennan County Jail on $1 million bond.

Blood and bodies littered the parking lot outside the Twin Peaks restaurant in Waco on Sunday, where authorities continue to investigate the shooting that left nine dead.
But friends and family of some of those arrested say innocent bikers were swept up for violence carried out by only a few.

The groups were there for a regional motorcycle club meeting, not nefarious purposes, said Katie Rhoten, whose husband, Theron, is an antique motorcycle enthusiast and was arrested shortly after arriving Sunday.

“He’s good to his family,” she told the Associated Press. “He doesn’t drink; he doesn’t do drugs; he doesn’t party. He’s just got a passion for motorcycle.”

Theron, an Austin mechanic, and two members of the Vise Grip Club, ducked for cover when they showed up at the restaurant just as the violence erupted. According to police, a group of biker gangs organized a meeting in the eatery’s patio area and the melee broke out when an uninvited gang showed up. Someone had their foot run over in the parking lot before the hitting, punching, stabbing and eventually, shooting, erupted inside and then outside the restaurant.

A total of 18 people were hurt in the violence Sunday afternoon.
At least 22 police officers, including 18 from Waco, were on scene immediately after getting word of the meeting. About four cops opened fire on the bikers after taking fire themselves amidst the chaos, Waco Sgt. Patrick Swanton said.

It’s unclear who fired the shots the killed the nine men, who ranged in age from 19 to 65. Police expect to recover 100 weapons, including chains, brass knuckles, knives, clubs and handguns from the scene, which investigators continued to pour over Wednesday.

“Yes there was a problem at this scene, and it was absolutely horrific, but there just also happened to be a significant amount of people there who had nothing to do with it,” Vise Grip Club spokesman Brian Buscemi told the AP.

The overloaded justice system in the central Texas town means some of those arrested could spend “weeks and possibly months” behind bars before having hearings about reduced bonds, defense attorney William Smith told the AP.

Family members of some of those arrested say the innocent were swept up with the criminal element who actually were responsible for the carnage.
Other lawyers think charges will dropped or reduced for several of those arrested because of the strain put on the local court system. The docket was already filled this week ahead of the new cases introduced in the aftermath of the shooting, according to USA Today.

"The magnitude of the arrests is amazing," Michael Heiskell, the president of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, told USA Today. "It could break the bank in McLennan County."

Police announced Wednesday morning that stores at the plaza where the shooting broke out will be allowed to reopen. Twin Peaks and its surrounding parking lot will remain closed as the investigation continues.

Twin Peaks corporate headquarters announced shortly after the incident that the Waco location would remain permanently shuttered.

That cop has a very intimidating looking military rifle. It should be banned along with his tank and riot shield.

Wait a minute. I was told by Gawker and Huffington Post that this whole thing was a white on white crime deal.

There is SO much more to this story than meets the eye. It feels a bit funny to me.
