The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced the list of induction nominees for 2015, including big names like The Smiths, Nine Inch Nails, Sting, and Lou Reed—the rock ‘n’ roll legend who died earlier this year after decades in the business, as the frontman for The Velvet Underground and a wildly successful solo artist. The 15 selections come from a wide variety of genres and decades—from ’60s Motown (The Marvelettes) and ’60s/’70s R&B (The Spinners), to ’70s disco (Chic) and ’80s hard rock (Joan Jett & The Blackhearts) and hip-hop (N.W.A.), up through contemporary pop-punk (Green Day).

To make it into the Hall of Fame, artists have to have launched their careers at least 25 years ago and “have demonstrated unquestionable musical excellence.” Other factors considered include the influence on other artists, technical/stylistic innovation and skill, and the breadth of their body of work.

A foundation committee creates the initial nomination ballot, typically five to seven of which will be voted in by over 600 music artists, historians, and industry members around the world. In 2012, the Hall of Fame added a fans’ ballot, composed of the public’s top five picks from the list, which counts as one ballot in the tallying process. The results will be announced in December, and the induction ceremony will take place at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio in April 2015.

I still don't get how bands/artists like The Cars, Cheap Trick, Journey (not the biggest fan of their music, but their success and influence is undeniable), Joe Cocker, Deep Purple, Ozzy Osborne, etc. never even get nominated yet Nine Inch Nails and Green Day do. NIN had a blip of success and Green Day had one of two good albums and most of the rest was crap that that they stole liberally from other people. The funny thing is Billy Joe Armstrong talks about how he was deeply influenced by Cheap Trick and he is far more likely to get into the Hall than they will.

At least they are finally nominating Lou Reed, The Smith, Chic, and Stevie Ray Vaughn which have been among the most notable snubs over the years.

I just can't get over it; Trent Reznor hated Cleveland and now he may be in the hall-of-fame there .... :giggle:

    I'm thrilled about NIN.
I think Oasis belongs there, too.
And Blur. And Radiohead. And Weezer.

NWA before NIN............Theory: NWA had more of a cultural impact than Trent Reznor. But I could be wrong.

kraftwerk would be cool, but if you're putting them in then what about dead kennedys, black flag, brian eno, faith no more, etc...other "alternative" acts sure as hell a lot more rock & roll than nwa

American Idiot was one of the biggest pieces of shit media to come from the Bush era goldmine of marketing disillusion and dissatisfaction with the current heads of state.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke and cannot be taken seriously.
