A failed stand-up comic attacked a comedian Monday night with a baseball bat during a show in suburban Seattle. Dylan Avila was preparing to introduce the next comedian during a show at a Renton bar when a man rushed the stage and struck him twice with the aluminum bat. Other comedians and audience members wrestled the attacker to the ground before he could hit Avila again. “He was one more hit away from killing me,” said Avila, who suffered a fractured skull but no brain damage. Witnesses said the assailant, identified as Steven Baldwin, tried out his own comedy routine a few weeks ago, but it bombed. Audiences were apparently turned off by the act, in which Baldwin claimed to be Jesus Christ and told a series of offensive jokes. “It was offensive on every level, and I don’t get offended easily — I’m a comic,” Avila said. Baldwin continued asking to perform the routine, so Avila banned him from the show. “Never have I kicked a comic off my stage, but this guy wasn’t a comic,” Avila said. Baldwin remains held without bond on assault charges. Friends are planning a pair of benefits next week to help pay Avila’s medical bills.
