An ISIS-inspired American was arrested in Ohio Wednesday in a plot to plant pipe bombs at the US Capitol and open fire on fleeing lawmakers, officials said.

Christopher Lee Cornell — a 20-year-old from Cincinnati whom his father described as a “mama’s boy” — was busted on charges of attempting to kill US government officials, authorities said.

He allegedly saved money to finance the attack, studied manuals on how to build bombs, and even met with a co-conspirator to discuss details of the plan — without realizing his supposed accomplice was an FBI informant.

Cornell was arrested shortly after allegedly buying two semiautomatic M-15 rifles and 600 rounds of ammunition from a gun store in Ohio called Point Blank, according to reports.

The FBI first had Cornell on its radar several months ago after an informant told the agency about his jihad tirades.

“Using his Twitter accounts, defendant Christopher Cornell posted statements, video and other content indicating his support for ISIL,” according to a criminal complaint using an alternate acronym for ISIS.

“Defendant Christopher Cornell also voiced his support for violent jihad, as well as violent attacks committed by others in North America and elsewhere.”

Under the alias Raheel Mahrus Ubaydah, Cornell, in meetings and messages with the informant, allegedly ranted about “enemies” that ran the government.

“I believe that we should just wage jihad under our own orders and plan attacks and everything,” Cornell wrote in an online message to the informant in August, according to the FBI.

“I believe we should meet up and make our own group in alliance with the Islamic State here and plan operations ourselves.”

Cornell insisted that such attacks had gotten a thumbs-up from radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki “before his martyrdom.”

Al-Awlaki, an American-born al Qaeda leader, was killed in Yemen by a US drone strike in 2011.

Cornell and the informant met in Cincinnati over two days in October and then another two days in November.

It was during those meetings that Cornell allegedly discussed the need for rifles and bombs.

Officials said the public was never in danger.

“This is hardly a model terrorist,” a law-enforcement source said. “But you can’t leave these guys untouched. If you leave these guys untouched, there’s no telling what they might do.”

The suspect’s father told Ohio TV station WKRC that he was a “mama’s boy” and a “homebody” who spent most of his time alone and didn’t even own a car.

The dad, John Cornell, said his son developed a passion for Islam only over the past two months, the station said.

Within hours of Christopher’s arrest, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security issued a bulletin to law-enforcement agencies across the nation.

“The alleged activities of Cornell highlight the continued interest of US-based violent extremists to support designated foreign terrorist organizations overseas, such as ISIL, by committing terrorist acts in the United States,” the bulletin said.
