Imagine going out of town to visit a dying relative only to come home and find a complete stranger living in your house; and worse, that stranger now says he legally owns that house.
WLWT-TV reported that Robert Carr moved into a house, changed the locks, and emptied the house.
Carr says he is able to claim the property through something called a “quiet title.†He says the family abandoned the house and gave up their rights.
Carr wants to keep the home and not have to pay a penny.
“What he’s looking for is full title and ownership of the home,†Alison Warner, the family’s attorney, told WLWT. “He’s in their home. They don’t know when he’s there. He can be there now.â€

The family has charged Carr with breaking and entering but he is even fighting that charge.
A quiet title action lawsuit brought in a court over property disputes. It is used to establish who legally owns a property.
The FBI has been informed about this case.

One article said that the family was visiting relatives but no where does it say how long they were gone.

This is exactly what I would do. I have mortgage statements proving it's my house and that family should too. Or I'ma call a coupla hard, pipe-hittin' A group of lovely people, who'll go to work on the homes here with a pair of pliers and a blow torch. I'ma get medieval on his ass.

That is not how "quiet title" is done. It has to go through the courts and the person would have to have maybe had a right to the house.

What he probably means is "adverse possession", but that takes a while. He would have to have open & notorious use, paid the taxes, etc.

Can't the family legally kill him as an intruder?

This is the dumbest story I ever heard of. I would have drilled out the locks and called the cops and demanded that they arrest him. There are snowbirds in Florida that leave each residence, where they live and where they winter for about 6 months a year.

Seems like he is claiming squatters law, but that's usually only in an abandoned place.

Why doesn't this piece of shit find a bank owned foreclosure and do this shit.

I believe the house is in foreclosure. Not clear if they have actually foreclosed yet. Also, doesn't say how long family was away. A week? A year?

This makes more sense. They guy probably somehow got a list of foreclosed houses and just picked one that he knew he could get away with doing what he did.

Yeah something doesn't make sense in the story. It doesn't make sense that someone goes away to care for a sick relative and comes back presumably a few weeks later and someone claims the house as their own. I think ti's still wrong and squatters should only go after bank owned homes.

At this point, I bet the "owners" have the same rights to this house as the squatter does. None. Probably owe 125% of what the house is worth and haven't made a payment in over a year.
