U.S. Man shot, killed by police officer believed to have been seeking help after crashing vehicle

North Carolina's Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department says Jonathan A. Ferrell, 24, may have been seeking assistance after a car crash. But when he ran toward officers, the former Florida A&M University football player was killed.

[IMG] Jonathan Ferrell, a former Florida A&M University football player, was shot and killed Saturday by a North Carolina police officer when he ran out at the armed officer while seeking help, authorities now believe.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An unarmed former Florida A&M University football player shot and killed by police — who were responding to calls of a man trying to break into a house — was apparently just seeking help after a car accident.
Jonathan Ferrell, 24, was shot multiple times when cops say he surprised a trio of Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers by running toward them around 2 a.m. Saturday.
Police say Ferrell’s description matched one given by a woman who moments earlier called 911 to report a man knocking wildly on her front door and attempting to break in.

Officer Randall Kerrick, 27, quickly reacted by firing his weapon — killing the former football safety. He was later charged with manslaughter due to “excessive” force.

Officer Randall Kerrick, 27, turned himself in Saturday just after a warrant was signed for his arrest on voluntary manslaughter charges.

“Our investigation has shown that Officer Kerrick did not have a lawful right to discharge his weapon during this encounter,” police said in a statement issued late Saturday night.
Kerrick, who joined the force in April 2011, was released on $50,000 bond, the Charlotte Observer reports.

Police Chief Rodney Monroe described Kerrick as “devastated” by the death.
The two officers with Kerrick at the time of the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting, according to the department.

Police say Jonathan A. Ferrell's description matched one given by a woman who moments earlier called 911 to report a man as wildly knocking on her front door, pictured. Police now believe he only wanted help.

“My hearts goes out to the Ferrell family, quite naturally, as well as the main members of the CMPD family. This is never something easy to deal with, never something easy for us to quite grasp, but we are going to rise from this as we have from other things,” said Monroe.

Initially, cops were vague about the shooting.
“(Ferrell) immediately charged toward the three officers, one in particular. That officer fired his weapon several times, striking the individual multiple times,” said Monroe.
Officials now believe that Ferrell’s dash at cops may have been a cry for help after a car accident left his vehicle mangled.

Not far from the scene of the shooting police discovered a wrecked vehicle, crashed in the woods. They now believe it may have been driven by Ferrell and he escaped seeking help.

A severely damaged vehicle believed to belong to Ferrell was later discovered in nearby woods.
“It’s quite possible he was seeking assistance. . . . It was a pretty serious accident,” said Monroe.
Ferrell was unarmed and died at the scene. Ferrell played safety for the Florida A&M team during the 2009-2010 season.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to his family during their time of bereavement,” the team’s interim athletic director, Michael Smith, said in an emailed statement to the Washington Post.
The tragic bloodshed was the first time in 30 years that a department officer was charged with an on-duty shooting, the Charlotte Observer reported.
One officer had tried to slow Ferrell with a stun gun prior to the fatal shooting, according to police, but its discharge was “unsuccessful.”

The cop tried to tase the guy, or did tase him, and the guy kept coming towards him? Was the cop telling the guy to stop?

There's something else going on here.

10 rounds into an unarmed man. Cop had been on the job for a year. Where's Captain Frank when we need him?

I'm right here... waiting for the facts before coming to a conclusion. But you go ahead and blame the cop without knowing a thing..

Gotta love the "college athlete" photo.... the guy could play ball, got a free education... whats he doing now?

He has the sloping brow of one with a low intellect.. Monty Burns would tell you the same.

Who'd a thunk it that college athletics aren't really about the education?

I thought you were waiting to draw a conclusion ? Sloping brow, guilty.

I'm betting he was on something because he was moving towards the cop and continued to do so presumably when the cop told him to stop, continued to move towards the cop when he was tased (or attempted-tased), and didn't stop until he was shot.

The guy was fucked up, IMO.

But that's speculation. I'm not convicting the guy of it yet. Just my suspicion.

FYI, he has never been arrested, has no record and his sister is a cop ---now what :munch:

oh and there were three officers on the scene, the one who got arrested was the only one to discharge his weapon

The victim is black, so I would suggest rushing to judgement before any of the facts are known, boycotting something, or investigating this as a hate crime or a civil rights violation. If I'm mistaken and the victim is white, then disregard.

All first time offenders have never been previously arrested.

Had Ted Bundy ever been arrested of anything previous to his arrest for murder?

    I don't know. That's a serious question.

Another thing: College athletes are often sheltered from arrest by their school, particularly football players.

Aaron Hernandez had never previously been arrested, but he had plenty of trouble down in Florida.

    Just sayin'.
