I found this article interesting. Iowa allows less judicial discretion and the net affect is black criminals are being most affected. What does this say about other states? Do judges bend over backwards to give criminals more chances or less time in prison? Why are some people appalled by this? Don't most law abiding people of any race want to live in peace and feel safer knowing most potential criminals are behind bars? And why do some people think these stats are an indication of bias in the judicial system? Blacks committed over 52% of the murders from 1980-2008, is it really unreasonable to believe they'd also commit more violent crime? Again, there are two types of people in the world, the decent and the indecent. People making excuses for these criminals are also indecent.

In the above example, even if there werent mandatory minimums, I doubt the situation would be any different. They may not be serving as long of a prison sentence due to extenuating circumstances, but pretty sure they would still be in jail.

IMHO, mandatory minimums should be eliminated altogether, I think the judge should always have discretion.

Most mandatory minimum laws involve non-violent drug users.

Also seems as though there is an increased push to charge people with felonies, which strips a person of many rights, the most important being firearm ownership, which amounts to backdoor gun confiscations/bans.

That scenario is being played out in Chicago/IL, dangerous felons are being released after serving a fraction of their sentence. The activist recently elected here as states attorney ran on a platform of criminal justice reform. Translation, "too many young black men are in jail."

Get ready for a bloody summer here. :woot:

That's the problem: the states' prison systems allow for very early release, even with a long sentence so people are back out on the streets picking up where they left off.

Federally, people basically do all their time - there's no make believe sentencing. Plus, there are federal sentencing enhancements that mandatory minimums, including mandatory life.

Some people believe that coddling will work; low graduation or test scores=Racism, more in prison for the commission of crimes= racism, not having the skills to justify better employment opportunities=racism, etc etc etc. Not one iota heard about certain people having to have and display the personal responsibility that the rest of us must adhere to because certain groups are incapable of doing so and are given a pass.

Yet somehow it is those who expect people of all races to abide by the rules and be judged by the same standards that are labelled as racists when in fact the true racists are those who think certain races must have the rules altered for them in order for them to succeed or live in a civilized manner like the rest of us are expected to.

What's funny is if you read the comment sections under these type of articles there are people that actually believe that whites commit these types of crimes at the same rate and the police and courts just look the other way. They believe this despite the fact if you go into many areas and the fast food places are protected by bullet proof glass, secure areas. The soft bigotry of low expectations will doom us. Look at the cheering when OJ got off even though most people thought he was guilty. Who cheers for criminals to escape justice?

Your definition of criminality may differ from others. :grad:

“You have to look at it from every child’s point of view that was raised in the hood,” said Harris. “You have to understand… how he gonna get his money to have clothes to go to school? You have to look at it from his point-of-view.”

Yeah it's funny right? If white folk were coming into the hood and committing most of these crimes the "No Snitching" philosophy would have never taken root.

The funniest aspect being all those people who were cheering for OJ didn't realize he would never have anything to do with them. He had moved on up long ago.
