please fly your nerd flags at half staff today

    :bigcry:

The ongoing Sony hack saga has taken a turn that will interest the geeks of the world, as emails reveal that Marvel Studios tried to get Spider-Man to appear in Captain America: Civil War. In the comics Spidey is a huge part of the story, beginning on Iron Man's side and unmasking himself on television before finally joining Captain America's anti-registration rebellion. Fans hoped and prayed that recent rumors about Marvel trying to get a Spidey crossover was about Civil War, so they should be happy to see that Marvel gave it a shot... and failed.

That isn't all the hacks reveal about Spider-Man. Doug Belgrad, Sony Pictures president, pitched a new Spider-Man trilogy to be produced by Marvel but distributed by Sony, a compromise that would have made fans happy as well, especially in the wake of the dismal Amazing Spider-Man 2. That plan also fell through.

What is Sony doing with Spider-Man? The Wall Street Journal says that there's a comedic Spider-Man cartoon on the table with Phil Lord and Chris Miller at the helm - that's awesome. Everything else will wait until January, which is when Sony executives will have a summit to discuss the future of their struggling (and sole) franchise.

My thoughts: this only bolsters the image of Marvel as a forward-thinking, fan-friendly studio and only reinforces the image of Sony as a studio unable to figure out what to do with this property. They had the answer right in their face and blew it. We almost lived in a world where Andrew Garfield, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr duked it out for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This is such an important thread to me that I sit here frozen like a Bobby Drake pop sicle unable to post because too many thoughts and scenarios swirl around in my brain.

No one was more invested in Marvel Civil War than me and on "Team Cap" from day 1.

Hope they don't kill Cap. Spiderman is too joke-y to be in his universe.

its such a great story.... and it sucks that Sony is so dysfunctional that they dropped the ball on getting Spider-Man onboard..

think about it... the new Spider-Man re-boot has hit a dead end... most fans hate it
what a better way to start over without a re-boot than to put Spider-Man in Marvel's Civil war
and springboard from there to a new set of movies???

Fucking Sony open your eyes motherfuckers

One of the many things we'll be robbed of is Cap vs Spider-man fights where Cap is schooling him in martial arts and giving him an integrity and morality lesson at the same time.

As well as when Spider-man reveals his identity on national TV as per Tony Stark - you see Cap watching on an underground bunker monitor with his team of rebels and he just puts his head down in disgust. Steve Rogers gives me those gravitas chills like no other super hero does

I WISH it looks THIS good. Amazing Spider-man 2 is only a few months old and it's actually gotten WORSE with age if that were possible????

That SONY and FOX film rights shit is the Marvel Universe's biggest villian by far - even moreso than Dr. Doom or Thanos or Galactus.

I find that true as well. I even erased it from my hard drive. When they were making it and they announced the villains , I thought it was doomed. Just too many. THEN they said MJ Watson was going to be in it???? SHIIIIIIIIITTTTT. WAY too much story for a movie. Like Ratner's X-men.

Casting sucked, costumes sucked...EVERYTHING! A total shitshow as it comes. It's laughable when Marc Webb claims to be this huge Spider-man fan and THAT's what he thinks fits the vision?????

Jaime Foxx as a nerdy black guy. His character would never have made it to that age being that much of a puss. And the way he gets his powers??? "Batman and Robin" AND Joel Schumacher laugh at that one. And they make the death of Gwen like some minor part of the story (in terms of on-screen air time). Marvel needs to take over.

It seems easier to have a character-heavy comic book series than a movie. When too many characters are crammed into a 100minute movie it can just feel so cluttered. Like the bad batman movies.
But it is a bummer spidey'so not gonna be in it.
But maybe just for the first one?
I'm sure this will just be the beginning of the Civil War series...

God damn Sony Pictures will never recover from this latest hack! They might as well sell the Spiderman franchise back to Marvel!

A few were but only his most ardent fans. Cap's big argument stance to Parker and Stark was once you reveal your identity every super villian can come after your whole family and personal life. Hard to argue that!?!

Ironically, Steve Rogers is the LEAST buttoned up about his OWN identity and defended their's the hardest. THAT'S how great Cap is and one of the reasons why he's the best super hero in either universe.
