    Anybody have back pain here?

America's Best Doctor and His Miracle Cures: Dr. John E. Sarno

Radio personality Howard Stern and I probably don’t have much in common, other than our longstanding relationship with, as well as supreme admiration for Dr. John E. Sarno, Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine, New York University School of Medicine.
Dr. Sarno, is, in my opinion, the most brilliant doctor in America and unfortunately, a largely neglected national treasure.

Sarno has cured thousands of sufferers of chronic pain that the medical community has misdiagnosed and been unable to relieve. His groundbreaking life’s work focusing upon the “mind-body connection” puts him millennia ahead of the medical establishment. His second book, Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection, a New York Times Bestseller, is an easy-read for any who are willing to entertain his novel, uniquely effective, approach.

It is a puzzlement to me how a doctor who produces dramatic beneficial results for his patients at little or no cost could be considered controversial whereas practitioners of costly, ineffectual so-called mainstream medicine are somehow regarded as more legitimate. Even other doctors at NYU regard him with some disdain, I discovered.

Sarno’s message was that in the overwhelming majority of cases, back pain was a symptom created by the unconscious mind as a distraction to aid in the repression of strong unconscious emotional issues. The hopeful message I took from his book was that there was nothing structurally wrong with my back and that I should resume normal activity as soon as possible.

    thoughts & feelings...

Was this the doctor the convinced Howard that homosexuality was curable?

If so, where are we with that?

Throwing my back out is great. It get a bottle of good drugs from the doctor, a couple of days off, a nice cozy couch, cable tv and people that are in my life that are actually not so demanding of me for a few days....

Americans do go to the doctor too much, for sure.

But there are people who have such problems that no matter how much positive thinking, jibing up the mind/body connection, or whatever else is going to help. I haven't gone to a doctor in . . . . . 10 years?

But if I'm in trouble, I'm going.

The mind is a powerful thing and I've no doubt that people can heal themselves. That being said, Wigster is just another spoiled crybaby from the Baby Boomer generation who believes in stupid new-agey shit. Same goes for Robin.

I have a herniated disk in L4/L5 and partial problems in S1 confirmed via an MRI. This is the lower region of the lumbar spine and the most common area for problems.

At my worst I had to lie in bed for a week, could hardly walk to the bathroom , couldn't stand long enough to get make a sandwich, and had to eat lying down. Had to drive myself to the ER, the hardest part was getting in and out of the car took at least 5 minutes each way. In the ER I couldn't lift my feet to sit in the wheelchair with the feet holders up. They took a piss test to make sure I wasn't faking it for pain killers, and gave me a pain medication injection and a prescription for Vicodin and muscle relaxers.

It got better on it's own, it wasn't in my head. I went to physical therapy and they taught me exercises on how to deal with it, and how to bend and pick things up. I had to walk around with a cane for a month or so and I got a 6 month temp handicapped parking placard. Haven't had a problem since the discomfort went away, and I'm back to normal, but still have and will always have the herniated disk.

Wrong. It's a disruption in your mind-body connection.

Howard should have cured his face by now. This doctor sounds a tad dangerous. At least Robin was trying to set him 'straight' :jj:

Yes, I had crippling back pain for years because I had a ruptured disc in my back that was pressing against the nerve. I had a discectomy and the pain went away in 2 hrs. Dr Sarno is a fucking quack.
