Things that are made from organic material age and decay, especially when they stop being alive. A piece of home-baked bread, say, left on your kitchen counter, will get moldy relatively fast. Lord knows what some ground beef would smell like after a week. But the artist Sally Davies has been photographing one McDonald's hamburger and fries every day for 137 days. They look basically exactly the same.

That's not always true. Put a piece of toast out and let it dry, it'll stay the same forever. "Aging" (or decaying) depends on moisture, heat and stuff like that.

Note the lack of cheese and sauce here. It's just a burger paddy, bread, and fries.

So if you eat enough McDonald's food, you can completely cease the aging process !!!

Maybe the amount of salt cures everything, but here are the listed ingredients.

    Patty
100% pure USDA inspected beef; no additives, no fillers, no extenders.

    Bun
Enriched bleached flour (bleached wheat flour, malted barley flour, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, reduced iron), water, high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, yeast, contains less than 2 % of each of the following: salt, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate, calcium silicate, wheat gluten, soy flour, baking soda, emulsifier (mono- and diglycerides, diacetyl tartaric acid esters of fatty acids, ethanol, sorbitol, polysorbate 20, potassium propionate), sodium stearoyl lactylate, dough conditioner (corn starch, ammonium chloride, ammonium sulfate, calcium peroxide, ascorbic acid, azodicarbonamide, enzymes), calcium propionate (preservative).

    Ketchup
Tomato concentrate from red ripe tomatoes, distilled vinegar, high fructose corn syrup, water, salt, natural flavors (vegetable source).

    Mustard
Vinegar, water, mustard seed, salt, turmeric, paprika, spice extractives.

    Pickle Slices
Cucumbers, water, distilled vinegar, salt, calcium chloride, sodium benzoate or potassium sorbate (preservative), natural flavor (vegetable source), alum, polysorbate 80, turmeric.

    Onions (Dehydrated)

    Seasoning
Salt, pepper, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (cottonseed and soybean).

First, it's a woman. What are her motives? Vegan, maybe?? Second, she's a photographer, not a scientist. Third, was there a control group? Like maybe a home made burger, or other franchise burgers? Of course not.
That burger looks like it was cooked to hell. Certainly not looking what I get when I get the occasional McD's. The fries will not get moldy becuase they are full of grease/oil. The buns---probably preservatives and low moisture. From the lack of dust, she must have it enclosed. No chance for air to circulate or spores to enter anyway.Plus, quite frankly, the pictures are different from each other. Some very much so. And the angles are different. And then there's the fact that our stomachs are filled with acid, so, NO, mold spores do not have a great chance at destroying the food. Like I said, a photographer not a scientist.
But I get what you're saying.
