Metallica are in massive debt, according to the band’s biographers
    Published: March 20, 2015
Following a series of disastrous financial decisions, Metallica find themselves in severe debt. This according to the band’s biographers, Paul Brannigan and Ian Winwood.
In an interview with literary magazine Weeklings, Brannigan and Winwood claim “Metallica have lost more money than they’ve made” since 2010. Both installments of the band’s Orion Music + More Festival “were disastrous financially,” and the band’s recent concert film Through the Never ended up costing nearly $32 million.
“Factor in HQ staff salaries, crew retainers, and assorted running costs associated with maintaining an entertainment corporation and you can easily understand why the band — of necessity now rather than by choice — are driven to tour Europe every summer,” Brannigan and Winwood added.
Metallica are currently holed away in the studio, working on their long-awaited follow-up to 2008’s Death Magnetic. They do, however, have several upcoming gigs scheduled, including a headlining slot at Rock in Rio USA and a string of European tour dates this summer. They also recently received a big pay day by playing a private show for Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff last month. Live audio from that performance has since been available as a free download through the band’s website.

Why in the world would THE BAND finance these things?

Do you think Tom Cruise funds his movie projects?

I bet the new album will be great. Nothing gets the creative juices flowing like financial desperation.

I trust the individual band members keep their own finances separate from whatever corporate entity under which the band does business.

Actually, TC produces his projects, takes no fee and gets a piece of the pie. He made $90M+ for Mission Impossible, but yes, it's not his money at stake.

What really got my attention is that it cost $32M to produce a concert film. That's really fucked up. Bieber's concert film cost $13M and it was 3-D and Mileys concert film cost $7M

I assume they arrogantly figured everything would be a wild success and they wanted to keep all the profits.

Being a "Producer" and funding a film are two totally different things.

Mel Gibson funded "The Passion" to the tune of roughly $50 million and made his money back many times over. Tom Cruise doesn't put up cash for his movies.

I don't think Metallica is that big of a deal. Their sound is boring and repetitious. They're quite shit actually. There, I said it. Let their legions of fans come after me with torches and pitchforks. Tough noogies.

As much as I hate Howard, he is right with respect to getting other people to finance/pay the costs for you rather than risk your own money.

It's ok to risk a little bit of money sometimes but never to the point it will ruin you financially.

Their first 4 albums are untouchable. If you don't like them then you just don't like that genre to begin with. If you took the first 4 albums out of the equation, they wouldn't nearly be as big today, so in that sense, they are overrated at this point.
