Deer Hunter was a classic 70s film, and while Heaven's Gate was a textbook case of an out-of-control production which bombed at the box office, I actually didn't think it was all that bad.

Critics like to pile on certain films, and that was one of them.

Mickey Rourke did a pretty good interview with Alec Baldwin on Here's The Thing, and he talks about Cimino a fair bit. It's not complete BS like Stern's interview with Len Dykstra which everyone ate up.

The Sunchaser was good. I guess it bombed and nobody saw it. It was his last film.

The first hour of "Heaven's Gate" is the best movie ever. The next 4 hours, not so much...

He also wrote and directed "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot", a great, weird little movie starring Eastwood and Jeff Bridges.

I grew up in South Western Pa in the late 70s and 80s and the Deer Hunter really captures that depressing feeling of what life was and kinda still is like. The people worked hard in the mines and steel mills and would head to the bars right after their shift. The bars would be VFWs and Legions and in some areas there would be blocks across from the mills that where nothing but bars and churches. My wedding and many of my friends looked similar to the one in the film.

Didn't he re-cut "Heaven's Gate" which made the movie a thousand times better?

Couple of trivia bits from IMDB, for whatever they're worth:

In 1979, he was slated to direct The King of Comedy (1982), which would have reteamed him with his The Deer Hunter (1978) star Robert De Niro. Because of missed deadlines and Cimino's preoccupation with Heaven's Gate (1980), he was fired and replaced by Martin Scorsese.

In December 1981, he was signed to direct Footloose (1984). Producer Daniel Melnick warned him that if the film went ONE CENT over its budget of $7.5 million, Cimino would have to cover the expenses himself. The following month, just as the movie was about to begin shooting, he asked Melnick to let him rewrite the script for an additional $250 thousand...AND to delay the start date until Cimino had done this. Melnick fired him and Herbert Ross directed Footloose (1984) instead.

Year of the Dragon wasn't bad.

I enjoyed the Deer Hunter, but it had a few annoying anachronisms and historical errors.

There's a documentary called Final Cut, I think, about the making of Heaven's Gate, which puts the whole affair in context. When you consider Cimino's reputation, the praise and awards for The Deer Hunter and the blank check he was given for Gate, what came afterwards looks pretty inevitable.

Gate has some terrific scenes, some beautiful photography, but it far less than the sum of its parts. Isabelle Huppert, a great, not good, actress, as a shotgun-toting cowgirl/madam? Just, no. And that she was cast despite the protests of the producers shows how Cinimo's ego was writing checks his abilities couldn't cash.
