Michael Sam Placed on Suspended List by Montreal Alouettes

    Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
The Montreal Alouettes announced they've placed defensive end Michael Samon their suspended list Monday, three days after he left the team's training camp for personal reasons.

Moving Sam to the suspended list frees up his roster spot as Montreal continues making adjustments to prepare for the regular season. The team also announced the release of six players Monday.

Sam, 25, left Montreal training camp Friday for undisclosed "personal reasons." The Alouettes said in a statement he would be allowed to come back to the team, though it's unclear if he will do so: "The Montreal Alouettes fully respect Michael Sam's decision, and we rally around him to offer all the support needed. The team has left the door open, and Michael is welcome to come back whenever he feels ready."

A former SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, Sam signed a two-year contract with Montreal last month. He came to the CFL after stops with the St. Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys in 2014. Sam, the first openly gay player selected in the NFL draft, was cut by St. Louis and Dallas for roster considerations.

The move to Canada was largely seen as a proving ground for an eventual NFL return.

"I wouldn't be surprised if he returns," Alouettes general manager Jim Popp told Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette. "I'm surprised he left. I was very surprised. If he doesn't come back, I would think football's over for him. He's the one that has to face that. But I don't think he doesn't want to play football. That's why he came here."

A source told Zurkowsky that Sam left the team after "pouting" due to his poor play in camp. Another source said the chances of Sam returning to Montreal were "nonexistent." Details for the reasoning behind those comments were vague but focused largely on Sam being ill-prepared for camp and taking issue with comments from a teammate about his disappointing play.

Neither Sam nor his representatives have made a public comment since he left the team. Sam's Twitter account was last active June 7.

With no NFL teams seemingly willing to give Sam a chance, we may be headed toward the end of his football career before it ever really got going.

I had a "....., Robin" joke typed out but have opted to go serious. The gay Jackie Robinson, right? Well, Jackie never quit when he was getting racial slurs hurled at him every game. Maybe next time the SJW should wait and save their terms of endearment for a guy with high character who can actually fucking play ball.

Just because you're gay doesn't mean you can play football.

Plain and simple, he doesn't have the talent to be a professional football player but he and his supporters will never admit it and will use gay discrimination as an excuse instead.

Fun fact: Jackie Robinson played in Montreal for the Montreal Royals before he played for the Dodgers and was a fan favorite.

Unfortunately, this guy's career was over the second he kissed his boyfriend on ESPN. The guy just carries too much baggage with him and no NFL team is going to want to deal with the circus he brings. If he can't make it in the CFL, he is done...next stop is Arena league. The average salary in the CFL is $82.000 a year....NFL average is $1.9 million, and the minimum rookie salary is $375,00. If I was him, I would have kept shut and stayed in the closet.

"Robin, its unfortunate that Michael Sam isn't getting a fair shake in the NFL. He is my favorite player and I was excited to go see him play in the CFL Now...I don't know if I will get that chance. If I was a team owner, Sam would be my first pick. Anything else, Robin?"

I'm a huge CFL fan and huge fan of the Als. Sam supposedly wasn't having a very good camp. He reported out of shape and probably thought that the CFL was easy. Fact is the field is bigger and the game is faster in a lot of ways, so being out of shape wasn't a good thing. It's fairly common for teams to put a player on the suspended list to clear that roster space, even thought they haven't done anything worth being suspended for.

The difference between this issue and Jackie Robinson is nobody cares what happens at your house after the doors close.

I believe everyone should have the right to live how they want to live, but I'm not interested in backstories...that's for reality tv.
This guy isn't playing because he's not good enough and smallish to play his position. His "coming out" was timed by his agent as a way to try and get him guaranteed money as a trailblazer. If he was honestly interested in being a pro footballer, he should go out there and try to win a starting spot.

He probably figured the CFL only plays 3 downs, so how hard could that be.

Does Stern even know what the CFL stands for let alone means? I was always suspicious of people my age who "knew nothing about sports". Creepy .
