Police say a mother tried to kill her two young children and herself by piping vehicle exhaust into her car in northeastern Pennsylvania. The Citizens' Voice reports 32-year-old Melissa Ann Scholl was arraigned Wednesday on attempted murder charges. Prosecutors say her 5- and 7-year-old children are expected to recover. An affidavit says the Wilkes-Barre woman buckled her children in the car and drove to a parking lot, where she put a hose inside the exhaust pipe of the car, placed the other end inside the vehicle and got back in the car. Police say a man spotted the hose, pulled it from the car and called police. Scholl declined to comment as she was escorted out of the courtroom. Her preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 23.
