EPA wants to monitor how long hotel guests spend in the shower
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) wants hotels to monitor how much time its guests spend in the shower.

The agency is spending $15,000 to create a wireless system that will track how much water a hotel guest uses to get them to “modify their behavior.”

“Hotels consume a significant amount of water in the U.S. and around the world,” an EPA grant to the University of Tulsa reads. “Most hotels do not monitor individual guest water usage and as a result, millions of gallons of potable water are wasted every year by hotel guests.”

“The proposed work aims to develop a novel low cost wireless device for monitoring water use from hotel guest room showers,” it said. “This device will be designed to fit most new and existing hotel shower fixtures and will wirelessly transmit hotel guest water usage data to a central hotel accounting system.”

The funding is going toward creating a prototype and market analysis for the device. The goal of the project is to change the behavior of Americans when they stay at hotels.

“This technology will provide hotel guests with the ability to monitor their daily water online or using a smartphone app and will assist hotel guest in modifying their behavior to help conserve water,” the grant said.

They think hotel guests are going to care about this? When I'm about to bang a broad in the hotel shower, I'm not going to check my app to see if I used too much water already.

EPA is one of those regulatory agencies that have outlived their usefulness. They have way too much power.

I can only speak for my state (California): If the drought keeps up like it has for the past four years, then "big brothering" the showers is going to be the least of our problems.

I realize there is a pronounced libertarian streak in the posters here; but the fact of the matter is that the market has not figured out how to properly allocate water here. At some point the question is not going to be whether you get a 5 minute, 10 minute or half hour shower but whether you can even flush your shit down the toilet at all. That has actually happened out near the Sierras in Porterville where potable water was basically unavailable for about three months last year.

Would be terrible if chick gets in the shower to scrub load off her face and hair and the water cuts out after a couple seconds.

If this system ever makes it to market, sounds like a way for hotels to tack on an excess shower time surcharge to the bill, with an excuse that it's just to help to save water.

We'd have plenty of water if the governor would re-open the use of the Sacramento River delta and fast track de-salination instead of bullet trains

Yet, those in charge keep giving more and more to illegals - guess they don't use water.

I heard on the John & Ken show yesterday that 80% of California water is used for agriculture.
