This really sucks, for anyone who doesn't know about Groklaw, they collect legal documents (and provide analysis) on cases related to privacy, software, and a lot of other issues. Their work was instrumental in the Microsoft Anti-trust case and its fallout, and recently they've helped to take down patent trolls like SCO. Basically, the operator of Groklaw decided that with Lavabit going down (and the owner facing contempt charges for shutting his site down rather than allow the feds to monitor all e-mail) it was just begging for similar federal pressure and surveillance (given the likelihood of whistleblower sites like Groklaw to aid future Snowden types). http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20...sa-spying-fallout-groklaw-shutting-down.shtml

Exactly. But even those who know there's something going on won't do anything about it.

They already have won. People are scared and instead of fighting back are just giving up. I think we've officially become...

so there was no force or pressure put on them whatsoever, they just threw in the towel for fear they may eventually be NSA/Obama victims? when the going gets tough, Groklaw heads for ze hills.

It's more complicated than that, the NSA have changed their tactics and are being vindictive pricks (although a lot of the techdirt commenters agree with you, I admit). The Lavabit guy decided that rather than follow a court order allowing surveillance of all the e-mail accounts (Snowden used that email service) he would shut down, and so now they've decided to (allegedly) go after him for contempt of court and some other as of yet unnamed charges. So Groklaw is trying to avoid that by shutting down before they can get slapped with any kind of order, that would have legal repercussions if they shut down. I admit, it's not the noble or brave thing to do, but I'm sure a lot of people would just walk away rather than risk jail time for shutting their site down.
