Firstly, feel free to tell me to fuck off. No need to be nice cuz I work here. I would just like an outside opinion on this crap and I know damn well I'll get brutal honesty here. :jj:

Basically I have two sites. An Etsy store where I pay per sale, and a regular .com that I pay monthly/yearly to host. The .com gets a tiny fraction of the the traffic I receive from Etsy.

My personal site (marshallwoodworks.com) is a pain in the ass to update so I inevitably keep putting it off. The pictures take forever to format and upload and it takes easily 3 times as long to list an item as it does on my Etsy site. I am constantly behind with updates. Right now there are probably 30 pens listed on my Etsy site that haven't made it to my .com site yet because I find it such a chore. Also, whenever I sell an item on Etsy I have to make sure to remove it from my other store, and vice versa.

Some people don't use Etsy or know wtf it is, so having both is nice. The traffic my regular site gets doesn't justify the time needed to update it tho. It's very minimal right now. I know if I want more traffic there I should be adding content regularly, but it's just not going to happen. This isn't my main gig. I thought about adding a blog or videos, but I just don;t have the time or talent for that right now.

Etsy has a new option where I can pay a monthly fee to host my .com site with them and it would automatically mirror my Etsy store. When I list an item on Etsy it will also be added to my .com site.

Unfortunately the Etsy options for .com sites just look very dull and plain to me. There's maybe 4 or 5 templates to choose from and a handful of fonts.

Should I keep a fancier .com site that is not updated regularly or move to the Etsy site that's more plain but easier to use?

Etsy charges $15 per month for hosting by the way. I'm on a plan that's pretty similar now.

I made my site myself (obviously) and it's pretty rough, but it took some work. I just don't want to make a change that puts me backwards. Nobody is going to buy something just because my website looks nice, but presentation counts.

    Here's a screenshot of both:

You mean the all white one? That's the Etsy template. They only have 5 templates and they cannot be customized.

Your .com looks very slick. But what does it matter if no one sees it and if it's a pain as well. Time is money.

    Any garypagetwo pens? :snicker:

Keep your .com site, pare it down to the bare minimums (samples of your work) and have a link that forwards everybody to Etsy. "See this crap and more like it at..."

That was my thinking, but I JUST read something that makes this all fucking moot. :suicide:

If I transferred my .com to Etsy every customer has to have a registered Etsy account to place an order. They do not do separate direct checkouts or PayPal.

It's basically a $15 per month vanity plate for my Etsy store. I wanted two separate things. Some people have no idea what an Etsy is and sure as hell don't want to start and account there just to buy something.

    Fuck that.

Looks like I have to go back to the drawing board and get my site updated. :suicide::suicide::suicide:

    Ahhh...

I like that idea. Still, that forces people to have an Etsy account to place an order. I've had people ask for my card, and when I mention Etsy they start to hand it back. "Oh, I don't do Etsy. I'm not set up for that." That's an actual conversation. I explained in that case they can go directly to my .com and order there and they did so.

Having both is necessary, I just thought the aesthetics were a fair trade for functionality. Now I see it's not.

    :bigcry:

I cannot WAIT until my daughter is old enough to run the website. She loves helping out. :etm:

In fact I did a show over the weekend and my ten year old asked if she could sell some of her pens. She made those flower pens out of colored duct tape and plastic flowers. I put them right in the middle of my table with her sign "Flower Pens $1" and she was beside herself. :dancin:

Fucking kid outsold me for most of Saturday. :slap:

Ah, thanks! That's my regular site. I think I'm going to keep that and just find a better system to keep it updated. :nocheer:

I did not read all that. But you do have nice pens.
That being said, make sure this Etsy does not go the way of eBay with it's fees and PITA type of rules and all that.

I keep a constant watch. :jj:

I also sell on Amazon, and Amazon is OFF THE CHARTS with their fees. On one pen alone I pay $35 to them.

Keep the fancy website but make it a showplace for what kind of work you are capeable of doing, FAQs and letting folks know you do custom work etc.. Nothing too specific like inventory and such.

Provide a link and do ALL your sales thru your Etsy

I seriously thought your site was very proffessional, but could definitely use some tits and ass at least.
