More than 1,000 people—including hundreds of fellow police officers from surrounding states—turned out at a funeral in rural Kentucky late last week to pay their respects to Jason Ellis, a 33-year-old K-9 officer gunned down last month in what authorities believe was an ambush.
Fido, Ellis' police dog, was there, too, placing his paw on the closed casket—a moment captured in a heartbreaking image by photographer Jonathan Palmer.
Fido was not with Ellis on May 25 when he was shot multiple times while collecting debris on a highway off-ramp in Bardstown, Ky., a close-knit community of about 12,000 located 40 miles southeast of Louisville. Ellis' slaying remains unsolved.

The dog would have no idea who is in there.

He is just showing off his fake reactions that he was trained to do so cops could search your car because the "dog indicated".

Actually, not true. Dogs still know the corpse by its scent, and there have been cases of dogs guarding their dead masters corpses until they starve to death rather than eat them.

So this is the only dog on the world that can't smell 2ft in front of it?

there's also a lot of examples where the dog says fuck it and chows down on the owner

I don't think so. There's way too many examples showing that dogs do know when their owner dies and where he's buried.

    Just one of many examples:

I wonder how much of this is "loyalty" vs Pavlovian response? "Hey, I smell the guy in there that brings me food. Where the fuck is my food? I'm waiting here till he brings me my food."

I have no doubt that the higher breeds, Especially German Sheperds have excellent memories of who they love and protect.....And noses that without a doubt can separate the odor of embalming fluid and the scent of their Master/Mistress........Noble Animals......

Of course. Dogs can smell cocaine through three layers of vacuum packed 3mil plastic packed with coffee and other odor masking chemicals. Amazing stuff really.

That's why mexican cartels have bounties on some of the dogs at the US-Mex border.

Dogs are just plain awesome! If you never had one, it's hard to feel the connect or emotion but great and loyal animals.

Good thing Beth didn't die of some unfortunate accident in Hamptons Manor. Bianca would have chewed her face off, then pissed on her just for making Bianca play dress up.
