I'm moving to a house in Cape Coral, FL in a couple months. What do you think?

Good place to start life and eventually a family? What do you guys know?

[Sorry if this should be in the bar or something]

Have a good friend there. He loves it. He's right on the water, but he's always complaining about the old people during the winter. Good Luck!!

I would not raise kids south of the Mason Dixon line and definitely not in Florida. Just saying.

Don't know much about Maryland other than the Blue Claw crabs but I moved to Florida from Long Island a little over a year ago and don't miss that shithole one iota...I'm a little north of Daytona though and my kids are grown...Fuckin' 34 degrees at 6am this morning though....

I am in Florida. Born here but left for a few dozen years to raise my kids anywhere but Florida .. Cape Coral is nice though.

Move to the Coral Castle instead, plenty of sunshine and you get to charge admission

Diane is one of the original Howard and Beth mockers from the original Stern newsgroup on usenet, back when most everyone was still fooled and before it was fashionable. Glad to see she made it back here :)

My mom moved to Ft Myers 6 years ago. Loves it. Weather is pretty nice all the time. Salaries and professional jobs are less plentiful. Property taxes are pretty decent (mom pays about 1/3 of what we pay in Columbus, Oh. living in a similarly valued home)...not sure if Cape Coral is more expensive or not when it comes to property tax. Sales tax isn't much more than what we pay here. They do tax groceries and I have found that groceries are quite a bit more expensive than they are here (even before tax). It takes forever to get anywhere locally in that area. Last visit, we were heading to a nature preserve that was 15 miles from Mom's home. Took nearly an hour to get there and another hour to get back. However, you can get to Key Largo in 3 - 3.5 hours, or Key West in 4 hours on the KW Express!

I lived in Florida, I guess it was OK ... definitely affordable. I've always said, if you've got a fear of bugs, live in FL for a while - you'll get over it. You'll HAVE to get over it! There's no way to survive down there w/a fear of them! .... First time I saw a large bug, I was freaking ... after a few months, you just swat it and move on ... :ucoffee:

Hey I live in Cape Coral (born and raised) when I was a kid I hated it, but now that I'm approaching my 30s I really enjoy living here. If you have questions or want/need any info just shoot me a PM

Not much work down there except tourism
Cheap to live except your electric bills
Florida has horrible public schools compared to the Northeast.
Even some retirees can't stand Florida and move back North.

Our area has made a big push to attract larger corporations to the area, and we have a HUGE healthcare industry.
The schools aren't the greatest, I still did alright lol
I wish more of the retirees would go back to where they came frome
