MTV plots a major return to music

Under the guidance of new President Sean Atkins, the youth network is embarking on a redo that will put music at its center.

‎With ratings flat or down in a number of time periods, MTV is turning to songs as its savior. The network is prepping a new version of its classic "Unplugged", a music competition show in the world of hip-hop produced by Mark Burnett, and a live-music series titled "Wonderland." The last one is MTV's first such program in about two decades.

"The thing that kept coming back when I first started this job was, 'Why doesn't MTV do more music?" Atkins said in an interview. "Music is our muse, our spirit animal. And it's a great muse to have. So we're leaning into it."

And more music could be on the way: Other shows in development include "Year One," an archival look at a superstar's early days; “It’s the Real," a Jewish/hip-hop mashup produced by John Legend’s company; and "Studio 24," a pairing of artist and celebrity to create a song in 24 hours, executive produced by Justin Bieber manager Scooter Braun.

"We know there are a lot of challenges ahead," Atkins said. "But one of the reasons I came here is because who doesn't want to be a part of the third reinvention of MTV?

I guess its good problem is todays music and artist are insufferable to listen to. But if they put on classic music videos or throw back stuff I might watch. I'd have to find what station MTV is at this point tho.

    Classic MTV. I would watch.

Take the current month/day and air previous years from that day.

I'd love to see what was airing on April 21, 1983. Or 84, 85, etc.

Whether or not they still have tapes of those broadcasts is unknown.

Our street was finally wired for cable in April or May 1984.

Duran Duran's "The Reflex" was played over and over and over and over again

Oh man that fucking sucks!! I love reality shows involving over zealous 20 year old douche bags that give delusions a grandeur. This is bullshit.

It was such a great thing when it came out and then it killed itself slowly to the point of irrelevance. Music now sucks. It has zero soul.

MTV is like Howard: it lost it's way so long ago, it's irrelevant at this point.

That is a great channel. It was Palladium on my previous lineup. Maybe they are looking at ratings there for some guidance as opposed to finding real life Beavis and Buttheads and giving them a show that no one will watch.

It was fine when they sprinkled in a show here or there like Beavis and Butthead and the Real World. Both of which were influencial and way ahead of their time. As usual they took the massive success of those shows and bastardized the concepts and ideas and gradually and unnecessarily fazed out the videos way before they had to and before the explosion of YouTube and other such sites. They didn't even stick with scripted original programming anymore or their movie production company. They gave make new cartoons, news and the awesome MTV unplugged series. It was 24/7 "reality" programs. Even the once unique and entertaining MTV Music Awards show became a dud because how can you drum up any interest in music video awards when you don't show music videos?! Stupid fucks. That award show used to be a must see event. Who can ever forget Madonna gyrating on the floor or that guitar player from Nirvana cracking his own head by throwing his guitar in the air. David Lee Roth reunion with VH and then proceeded to kill within minutes of opening up his mouth on stage. Chewbacca winning a lifetime achievement award. C'mon that channel used to be fun. I think it's too late now for them. You have other cable outlets that play concerts and you have the Internet to watch any video at a moments notice. They gave up their music dominance in the 2000's and that's just the way it is.

But they could fix it. Go back to music. Give the bands a place to promote. It's there for fixing.

Sure, I could catch the video when I want to watch on Vimeo or YouTube, or I could tune in and wait for hours . . . .

That said: I do remember when my rich buddy's family got MTV when it first came out. Seeing Duran Duran Rio and Thomas Dolby Blinded and all the other fine offerings back in the day . . . good times.
