Muscular Dystrophy Association's Labor Day weekend telethon raises $52.3 million

CHICAGO — The Muscular Dystrophy Association's nationally broadcast annual telethon has raised about $52.3 million in contributions over the Labor Day weekend.

The two-hour "MDA Show of Strength" aired Sunday on ABC, and the organization says it will continue accepting donations through Monday. A final tally's expected Tuesday.

MDA President and CEO Steven M. Derks says it was inspiring to see so many celebrities, musicians and athletes join forces to help raise money for the treatment of muscular dystrophy and related diseases.

Grammy-winner LeAnn Rimes, Rascal Flatts and hip-hop star Jason Derulo were part of the show's lineup this year, along with other entertainers.

The telethon was the fourth since comedian Jerry Lewis's 45-year role as host ended. The 2013 telethon raised more than $59 million.

Does anyone even watch this anymore? And is it really shown for only 2 hours now?

I have fond memories of the marathon as a kid when it was shown for 24 hours on KTTV 11 L.A. Even at my job in the mid 80's when the corporate office had a contest for the employees to sell a paper foot for Jerry that the customers could sign and we would hang it in the store, we sold the shit out of them to beat each other. Another piece of childhood gone forever.

I still remember watching this show:

This used to be a such big deal when I was a kid back in the '60s & '70s. We watched as much as we could back then, mainly to catch Jerry get loopy as fatigue began to set in.

Oh yeah, Bianca's Furry Friends raised a buck 35 this weekend and they didn't even have a telethon. So there! The Power of Sterns is that strong.

Two hours!!! What happened. I waited all night for Frank Sinatra to come on WGN and he never showed up. Even puff faced Jerry was no where to be found.

That was the best acting job both of them ever did in the many many of the movies they made together. I seriously doubt either of them wanted this to go down this way at the telethon. Jerry was a very angry man and I think always thought he was top banana and THE box office draw. He became a very nasty and mean man and it became very evident even at his MDA gig. They fired him. Jerry even said if the roles were reversed the split would have happened many years sooner. How many millions has has MDA taken in. This horrible Disease should have been eradicated a very long time ago if possible. Way to much goes to administration and far to little goes directly to the research and the people afflicted with it like Beth and Howard's new building. Oh did somebody mention the ALS challenge, only 27 percent goes to research.

Without question and yea, the overnight footage was the best, plus all the local coverage. There used to be so many fundraisers. I remember kids would have full carnivals in their back yards.

With the $52M Jerry should buy a house in Palm Beach to take the kids once before they die.

The same could be said for any other disease. The world's governments figured out a long time ago that treating illnesses with drugs makes an economy more robust, as opposed to actually curing anything.

I used to love the telethon when I was younger. I liked it when jerry would yell out "tympany" when he wanted to see a new total.

Beth could build like eight cat houses with that money. Instead they're just giving it to a bunch of crippled kids.
