So I spent a few hours today at the beautiful Green Lane Reservoir Park with my daughter, my roomie's daughter and of course, Captain Steve Zissou.
I've posted about this park before... it's expansive and different parts of it can be accessed from different locations. (This particular region of the park is about 10 minutes from me.) It has lots to offer amenity and recreation-wise, and has a variety of trails/types of trails, many of which border or cross the water, and all of which are part of the Perkiomen Trail (which leads all the way to the art museum area of Philadelphia).

I feel really fortunate to live so close to places like this.

This trail runs along the bank, passing by a dam and some small waterfalls. It is very rocky, but both the girls and the boy had fun navigating it, and did so with great skill...

It has been requested that I post some video of Steve, so I took some.

He has settled in quite nicely in his new home.
His fear of getting in the car is totally gone (we go lots of places), he now wags his tail and jumps on me and is just SO excited to see me when I come home from work, and he's gotten really good at walking on the lead (something he'd not had any experience in).

He's become VERY attached to me and very focused on what I say. He's very attentive and is really starting to respond quickly. (These are all some of the reasons I wanted a herder).

As soon as we were out of the main, open region of the park (where off-leash dogs are prohibited) I let him roam free and he was great!
He'd roam and explore and do his thing, but as you will see, the second I say his name and call him back, he's right by my side...

Aw, Dev. He's such a good boy! So well behaved. He comes to you when he calls and looks like he is making eye contact with you. What a sweetheart.

This was my first off-lead attempt with him in this type of setting. He did exactly as I'd hoped.

Try taking him to a dog park and working off lead. If he will still be focused on you with all of that distraction, you're all set.

I'm going to start formal obedience training with him this week. After a few weeks of that I'm going to try him out off-lead in more locations.
I looked into local dog parks but they all require state IDs and rabies tags. Since I got him out of state, I have to get PA ones before I can take him anywhere. I'll do that soon.

I have an e-collar for mine. If used properly, they are so worth it. I keep mine off leash most of the time. I rarely have to use the electronic stimulation, I mainly use it to beep and he get's they idea.

Yea my other dogs had invisible fencing. They each only had to get zapped once or twice before the beep was enough to keep them contained. The Husky was still a bit of a challenge at times, but not because he didn't know better... he just didn't care. :jj:

But Steve is a totally opposite breed. His instincts will tell him to stay close to me and focus on what I say, like the other herders I've had/had experience with.
