My techie coworker thought is was super cool and asked where I got it.
My 72 year old mom asked if it does anything magical. I said the back end is a stylus that would work on her iphone, but the pen will automatically replace the word n*gger with "enwurd"(as a joke, of course). Her only comment is "the stylus is cool".

How big is it? Will it hurt your arm to write with it?

seriously, that pen is really nice.

It's small, maybe 4-5 inches. I'm sure you're woman enough to handle it.

I'm actually in the middle of making a few more of those, too. My youngest daughter always tries to press "buttons" on them. :jj:

You should see the looks people give me when they ask what I'm working on.:jj:

I actually just started with pens because I wanted to try turning wood. I bought a lathe with zero experience using one, and the wood blanks for pens seemed like they'd do the least amount of damage since I was pretty certain I was going to get hit in the face.:jj:

I just found it to be relaxing and fun. I've made plenty of other stuff, but the pens are fun to make.:dontknow:

It does seem to make as much sense as building typewriters at this point in time, but there are a ton of people that collect pens.

i still don't see how you got a circuit board thick enough to turn on a lathe

btw, I have 7 manual typewriters here dating from before WWI that i like to clean up and restore, because it is totally manual work and it relaxes me. i don't have to think about work or use any thinking like I do at work. People are willing to pay 10x what the typewriters cost me, once i make them new again.

It's not thick at all. It's encased in clear acrylic. There is a brass tube that defines the inside dimensions of every pen I build. The tube holds the pen mechanisms.

In the case of these circuit boards, a THIN circuit board is wrapped around the tube, and then the entire thing is placed in a mold and covered in acrylic.

The hard part is the final dimensions of the pen are so tight that i have to turn the acrylic down to the point it's almost hitting the raise circuit components. There are always a couple that will fail on the lathe and need to be stripped of all acrylic and recast. I have one or two waiting for this process at the moment.

That also means that anything I can adhere to the center core of the pen I can cover in acrylic and turn. I've done family photos, stamps, watch pieces, and the Saloon logo that I printed on self adhesive photo paper.

If you were really interested I'll take pictures of the "failed" piece so you can see how it looks. :dontknow:

i originally bought one off ebay because NYC has this stupid rule that gun license forms have to be submitted typewritten and not in pen. I only wanted to spend $30. when it arrived i had to repair it in order to use it.
