    My kid (son) is 20 years old. He's never had a job. He's been in college ever since HS, including summers. He's going into his 2nd semester junior year next Fall (which is August). I've been making him apply EVERYWHERE for part time jobs for this summer. I'm trying to teach him HOW to get a job. ANY job. I think he's getting it, but I'm not so sure.

    Personally I think having a job in HS during summers or part time is a good idea. I learned a lot about dealing with the public and by age 20 you may start to feel awkward I'd think if you don't already have that down pat. I see a lot of people that age today who can barely speak to an adult.

    I started babysitting at twelve. Lied about my age to get a real part time job at fifteen and have been working in some capacity since then. I WAS VERY HAPPY to be making my own money. I could buy what I wanted. I worked while I was in high school and college.. These days some parents keep their kids on their cell phone lines til they're thirty!! I can't imagine at twenty having mom and daddio having to hand me some dough to get new undies..Just me...

    I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your loved one.

    School is not the problem for Millennials. The complete and utter lack of any other knowledge is one of the biggest contributions to the douchebaggery which comes with being a Millennial.

    He needs to:

    * Break a sweat while changing the oil on his car.
    * Earn an honest dollar through hard work...any hard work.
    * Take a punch. Every man needs to know how to fight, and when their actions will cause a fight.

    No one TAUGHT me how to get a job. This is the computer age. Kids can apply for a job online.

    Same here. I just already had a motor about that and other things. I was "raised" like a feral raccoon, so I don't know where the nature / nurture part of things comes into play here.

    Shitty jobs which the kids in my family were proud to have as teens:

    * Janitor at restaurant
    * Dishwasher
    * Cook
    * Sweeping up at a horse track (not sure of job title)
    * Paperboy
    * Door-to-door salesman
    * Pizza delivery driver
    * Carny (yes, an actual carnival worker)

    We all grew up to be successful and fairly wealthy. I see these kids today with ZERO job skills and they get real jobs after college and don't know the first thing about being an employee. They challenge their bosses and perform terribly.

    Kids can learn a lot by handling basic jobs.

    Summers off from college I never had to look for a job - I went back to the place I worked in H.S. & asked to be put on the schedule.
