I had to go to my grandmother's. She lives on a winding, wooded back road that was very pretty.

Grandmom's driveway is long and winding also. It had not been plowed, but I wasn't worried. I put it in 4WD at the top of the driveway. The light came on indicating that it was in, and I got down the driveway with ease.

I got to the house and stopped in the turn-around spot.
When I went to leave is when I ran into a problem...

I couldn't move. So I tried 4low. Still no dice.
I was sunk in snow up to the frame and going NOWHERE.

After a few minutes of trying, I was getting out of the truck (in my jeans and sneakers) to get a shovel, when conveniently, Grammy's neighbor came walking up. He'd come to shovel for her.
We shoveled out around the tires, thinking that this would be enough to get me going, and tried a few more times.

...no success. I was still stuck. I didn't understand it. Then as the neighbor was trying to help direct me, he noticed that my front tires weren't spinning. I said that didn't make sense. The 4WD light was on.

He recommended that I take it out, put it in again, spin in reverse and then try it forward. So I did and it worked. I plowed right through the snow. Apparently even though the light was on, the 4WD was NEVER ENGAGED. I have no idea why (perhaps I should have put it in reverse initially to lock the hubs) but I was struggling to get out of 12+ inches of snow for a half hour in REAR-WHEEL DRIVE.

I assumed it was in 4WD when I made it in the driveway so easily and without any slipping. The neighbor said it was probably because there was SO much snow that I didn't slip.

    I'm an idiot.

But thank god he was there, or I never would have known my front wheels weren't moving.

I don't know. I put it in 4WD and the light came on that indicates when it's in. But it wasn't. My front tires weren't spinning.

Always. My kid was throwing a tantrum once in the grocery store. She was sitting on the floor screaming and wouldn't move. The whole scene was so ridiculous I just had to take a picture of her. That pissed her off more, I think.

I applaud your ability to stay calm in these situations.

I usually freak out, throw a hissy fit, and shut down.

Well, I guess that's what happened. Sucks that I wasted so much time and energy in a futile attempt to get through the snow in rear-wheel. My sneakers and socks are still wet from shoveling. :jj:

But thank god that dude was there to notice it wasn't engaged.
