NY POST -- Ignorance is no longer musical bliss for those running websites boasting lyrics to hit songs.

Internet entrepreneur Brad Greenspan, who co-founded MySpace, was just ordered to pony up $6.6 million in damages to music publishers for posting copyrighted lyrics without permission of songs from the catalog of such acts as Green Day, Van Morrison and David Bowie on his LiveUniverse site.

According to Paul Fakler, a partner at NY-based Arent Fox IP, the firm representing a group of music publishers involved in the lawsuit, Greenspan could have easily avoided the massive penalty “by simply getting a blanket license like everyone else who wants to have a lyrics site.â€

The publishers (Warner, BUG and others), who’ve been battling Greenspan on the issue since 2009, were demanding $100,000 per song, which was eventually lowered to $12,500 a pop.

US District Judge George Wu’s ruling is writing on the wall for the remaining low-traffic — and low-budget — lyrics sites that are foolish enough to think they’ll remain under the radar .--Joseph Barracato

    Fucking jews.. suing over LYRICS?!!

And if you think that's bad, they send out their peons to harass small businesses into paying licensing fees for just playing a CD or the radio!

    This was never legal.

What a dumbass. Song lyrics have always been protected intellectual property of those who owned the publishing rights to the music.

Why hasn't it been cracked down? Because for years, artists were faced with the unpleasant choice of either being robbed or suing their fans.

Now they just don't give a fuck. :jj:

These things have been in place forEVER. You were NEVER allowed to broadcast music without paying royalties.

You're not even allowed to play the radio on your company's music-on-hold without paying royalties.

im pretty sure "baby baby baby ohh" is the entire song, or at least over 50% of it.

where does it end, shouldnt they charge more for people with better memories?

If its broadcast to the masses, it should be free for them to use. Citing past royalty issues doesnt address the fundamentals, only what USE TO happen.

making companies pay more for shit you give away for free makes no sense (like playing the radio in a resturant). I dont care what deal the crooks have already worked out between themselves.

poetry is dead, if youre a good enough poet, your shit will be published and you will get money from that. When will it stop? Should writers get money when soemone references them online (according to your model yes, according to common sense NO).

Should Shakespeare get royalties from all the story tellers that have used his plot devices?

Should Gutenberg get royalites from every printed bible? He sure pioneered the idea...

its a slippery slope, and your ass is arguing against your best interest, and intellectual growth.

    ^All nonsense.

the publisher maintains the legal right to determine WHO and WHERE THEIR WORK is distributed or reproduced.

    The End.
