A NASA spacecraft that launched in 2007, is closing in on the dwarf planet Ceres in the solar system's asteroid belt has captured tantalizing new views of the huge space rock, revealing hints of craters and other structures on the surface of this mysterious body.

NASA's Dawn spacecraft snapped the new images of Ceres, which is the largest object in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, on Jan. 13. Scientists unveiled the images on Monday (Jan. 19).

Dawn is rapidly approaching Ceres and is due to arrive in orbit around the dwarf planet on March 6. The images are still blurry, and are primarily for navigation purposes for Dawn, but they show hints of craters on Ceres' surface, including a mysterious white spot near the upper left, which may be light reflecting off of a crater.

By early to mid March they will have a clear shot of what Ceres actually looks like.

I wish space exploration was more of a priority for this country. This stuff is truly fascinating.

I agree it is expensive, but the long term rewards are well worth it. Even if we don't use the money to explore space there should be a much greater effort to detect asteroids. The billions we spend on NASA is a tiny fraction of the trillions we spend on war and other things. Bill Gates could fund NASA for over four years by himself.

    Armageddon(movie)...

President: "We didn't see this coming??"

Dan Truman: "Well, our object collison budget's a million dollars, that allows us to track about 3% of the sky, and beg'n your pardon sir, but it's a big-ass sky."

I though they decided Pluto wasn't a planet anymore .... so how's this thing a planet then? I never heard of it. I love this kind of stuff though! I worked at NASA Ames Research Center for about a year and saw some really cool stuff.

Pluto is listed as a dwarf planet now. They are finding these dwarf planets left and right with their technology today. Ceres is between Jupiter and Mars. It's freaking amazing what was out there so close to us, but we never knew about till now.

Planet Makemake is just outside of Pluto. One big dwarf planet in a gravitational rotation. A floating rock. So much out there, it's insane.

    What it probably looks like.
