Get yer' readin' glasses all polished up and yer' crying tissues ready to roll, because the leading conservative journal is gearing up to oppose Trump. Enjoy.

National Review, conservative thinkers stand against Trump

Los Angeles (CNN)National Review, the conservative magazine founded by William F. Buckley, will publish a special issue on Friday opposing Donald Trump's bid for the presidency, according to a source with knowledge of the issue's contents.

The issue will feature a blistering editorial that labels Trump a threat to conservatism, as well as essays by 22 prominent conservative thinkers from various ideological factions, in opposition to Trump's candidacy, the source said.

"Donald Trump is a menace to American conservatism who would take the work of generations and trample it underfoot on behalf of a populism as heedless and crude as The Donald himself," the editorial states.

The issue, first reported by Jonathan Martin of The New York Times, comes as conservative pundits and GOP leaders debate which of the two leading Republican candidates -- Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz -- poses the greater threat to the party.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when trump starts winning elections.... Are these assholes going to endorse trump or will they tank the election for Hillary. That's why Jebs ad showing Hillary winning is more of a threat than a warning.

Tiny magazine few read, it's lost $25M over 50 years according to its founder. I seriously doubt the type of person who reads it was gonna vote Trump anyway.

They've been jihading against Trump for the last 6 months anyway.

I don't think Bill Kristol or Glenn Beck will have much influence - they've been crusading against Trump for so long already and are basically dismissed by most conservatives now.

What's crazy is Trump seems to have more in common with the founder Buckley than the current writers/agenda

    Glenn Beck’s Terrifying Messiah Complex

Beck’s two years of mostly mindless harangues and toxic attacks, which kicked off when he debuted his new show the week Obama was inaugurated in 2009, did deep damage to the public dialogue and helped legitimize rancid rhetoric in a way we haven’t seen in modern American history. And in a way we’d certainly never seen or heard before on a national television platform.

Most disturbing of all was the specter of hostility that hung over Beck’s show and the unavoidable way his dark conspiracies appeared to move some fans to acts of political violence.

Fans like Richard Poplawski, who ambushed police officers at his mother’s Pittsburgh home, gunning three of them down with an Ak-47 style rifle. Poplawski feared “the Obama gun ban that’s on the way” according to a friend; a conspiracy Beck had pushed.

He was instrumental in the radicalizing of the same right wing that is now worshipping at the feet of a demagogic billionaire named Trump. They may have been extreme before, but Beck unleashed the beast. He has since recanted much of his behavior during the Fox years, much of which bordered on incoherent lunacy, by saying that he “made an awful lot of mistakes” because he “played a role, unfortunately, in helping tear the country apart.” You might say that.

I'm not anti-Trump, though I think he is swinging wild at this point. More to the point, the fan-boy status he has on this board is amazing. A little critical distance is a good thing. It's hard to just dismiss some of these writers. I've bolded the most influential, and no one can possibly impeach Podhoretz's role as a serious conservative thinker.

    • Thomas Sowell, economist.
    • Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Center.
    • Glenn Beck, founder of The Blaze.
    • Edwin Meese and Michael Mukasey, former U.S. attorney generals.
    • Dana Loesch and Michael Medved, syndicated radio hosts.
    • Cal Thomas and Mona Charen, syndicated columnists.
    • William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard.
    • R. R. Reno, editor of First Things.
    • John Podhoretz, editor of Commentary.
    • Yuval Levin, editor of National Affairs.
    • Mark Helprin, novelist.
    • Andrew C. McCarthy, contributing editor, National Review.
    • Erick Erickson, founder of The Resurgent.
    • David McIntosh, president of the Club for Growth.
    • Steven F. Hayward, author and presidential scholar.
    • Ben Domenech, publisher of The Federalist.
    • David Boaz, executive vice president of the Cato Institute.
    • Katie Pavlich, editor of Townhall.com editor.
    • Russell Moore, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.

You are obviously unfamiliar with the conservative movement if you think Michael Mukasey, Bill Kristol or John Podhoretz hold any sway, especially Bill Kristol.

The only decent one is Sowell, and he's very old at this point.

This is a list of people that have been attacking Trump forever anyway. NR is not a prominent conservative publication anymore because they are so anti-conservative, pro-establishment.

Check out Drudge or Breitbart if you want to see where the conservative movement lives today

Beck has so beclowned himself the last few years. I'm truly amazed he has a show and isn't in a padded cell

He was just recently embarrassed by promoting a fake tweet of Trump's. Then he apologized for pushing the fake tweet. Now today he's back on the conspiracy bandwagon saying it was a fake tweet but maybe there was truth in it :jj:

Only Megan really went into it. Then she ran the story about Levin attacking trump.

Then she said in the interest of fairness she had on two Trump supporters, one who worked on Nixon's campaign and called Trump the only real valuer of the second amendment, for a grand total of 2 questions each. This after giving people an outlet to trash Trump for 10 minutes.

That bitch hates that Trump destroyed her so effortlessly.
