    They don't want to damage his fragile ego. They also don't want to upset Simon Cowell who has another disaster on his hands with X-Factor.

    If it truly becomes a ratings disaster what happens? Does Cowell let Stern go? You wonder about a one year contract....maybe Howard had some trepidation, an idea that this might not be a good fit. Just not renewing allows all parties to save face.

    Howard has a million excuses why he won't do AGT next season. He also has a million reasons why he will do it again next season if the ratings pick-up. Whatever happens the spin will reflect positively on him. It will never be because the show didn't do as well with him as judge over departed Piers.
