Ok fellow imbibers; when ordering an alcoholic beverage, what's the difference between "neat" and "up"? This is critical.

Since my porn thread is moving along nicely on it's own...
    Neat or Straight Up?

Both of these mean “simple” in a most English language uses, and that confuses people.

    • Neat is the one that’s actually simple. It means the liquor ( just a single type — you don’t order cocktails “neat”) is poured into a glass and handed to you at room temperature. Neat.
    • Straight Up or Up (same thing) means the drink is chilled with ice (shaken or stirred) but then strained and served without it. The drink will be cold and very slightly watered down (which is good for most liquors, so don’t get on your high horse about it ruining the taste)
    Thank yew!!!!!!!!

All booze is better with ice, even 25 year old scotch.

I guess I'm alone. I only drink champagne. Typically Piper Heidsieck. If not available, quality cava.

"Up" usually means it's served in a martini glass.
"Neat" is just the liquor, no ice, in a highball glass.

You couldn't be more wrong. Fine Scotch should never touch ice. If you can't drink it neat then go back to the college girl flavored vodkas and drinks with Jaeger or Fireball and leave the good Scotch to the men.

If someone blindfolded you, do you think you could honestly tell the difference between a good scotch and a generic middle of the road scotch? I drink vodka more than I should and I can barely tell the difference between good high quality vodka and generic vodka, other than it being more smooth there isn't any difference to me. I'm just curious what people are tasting that I don't taste that makes them spend so much money on the 'good stuff'.

neat means you tuck in your shirt, comb your hair and wear a belt. Straight up means you are not gay or fag. Up means, it is not down! Simple.
