Netflix has made movie theaters across the country very, very angry

The headline likely won’t surprise anyone who has seen what Netflix has done to both the television and film industries over the last several years, but there’s a very specific reason that theater owners are upset with the streaming service this time.

Netflix made its own feature-length film.

You probably saw the latest trailer for Beasts of No Nation floating around the Internet this week ahead of the film’s release on Netflix today, but what you might not have realized is that the Netflix original hit some theaters as well. I say “some theaters” because AMC, Carmike, Cinemark and Regal all announced they were boycotting the movie earlier this year.

Traditionally, theaters have been given 90 days to screen movies before they leave theaters and reach home video or streaming services. Considering all the money that theater chains throw into advertising, you can see why they would be less than pleased with any other arrangement.

“Netflix is not serious about a theatrical release,” Patrick Corcoran, vice president of the National Association of Theatre Owners, told Wired. “There isn’t a real commitment.”

“It’s not equal space,” chief analyst at BoxOffice.com Phil Contrino added. “A lot of people subscribe to Netflix and they can watch Beasts of No Nation at home. How many of those subscribers are going to go see it in theaters?”

To make matters even more contentious, theater owners know exactly why Netflix is asking them to put Beasts of No Nation in their theaters. Netflix wants to contend for an Oscar, and according to the organization’s rules, the only way to do so is to screen the film in theaters on the same day or before a home release.

It appear that the old adage — “if you can’t beat them, join them” — does not apply here.

You can watch the final trailer for Beasts of No Nation, which is currently streaming on Netflix, below:

It's the wave of the future.

I saw word of Larry David as Bernie Sanders on last night's SNL cold open today, searched, and watched it online.

I would prefer to see films shot for a big screen on a big screen, howevuh.

Pretty good movie, visually it's one of the best, amazing use of color and shadows.

The story well I kinda felt it lacked subtly, one minor character just simply blurts out the message before he dies.

If you have Netflix and you don't mind seeing kids and adults getting murdered and raped I highly recommend it.

nobody else is making movies, so why shouldn't Netflix make programming? the movies released this past summer were so lame that the studios might as well have taken the season off. if Netflix and Amazon decide to make programming now, i am all for it. in fact i will pay a premium for it.

So do what the rest of us have done forthe past 15 years - put a big screen in your house.

Paradigm shift to same day releases on PPV. Hope the movie industry gets the hint quicker than the music business.

Hollywood will just keep making Ghostbusters remakes and stupid super hero movies, what's wrong with that?

It seems, to me anyway, that too many of the movies released today are mostly "special effects" and very little story. While I liked the Star Wars movies and Terminator movies, they were small stories, bit effects. I like stories and few were that type. So I don't go much anymore.

For me two of the greatest movies of all time are "Mrs. Minever" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035093/ and "The Best Days of Our Lives" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036868/.

Yes they are old, but they are good stories.

But you can't pause the film at the theater so you can go empty that 22oz you guzzled with the popcorn.
