Need some help - looking at taking a job in the Monterrey area. I've traveled all over the U.S. and lived in Chicago, NY, STL and Dallas. Really enjoy biz travel to Bay Area/San Jose but this would be a big move after living in flat, cheap Dallas for the past 20 years.

Pros: Weather looks great...big wine drinker...we'll be empty nesters when it happens so a small place will be fine. I lean left so the politics and "People's Republic of California" stuff doesn't bother me.

Cons: Cost, state income tax, gas prices, traffic.

    Your pros and cons please?

Howard related because maybe Jimmy will make a party for me when I arrive.

For the record I was born, raised and still live in coastal Southern California.
Most of my friends and family that have left for seemingly greener pastures have either come back or want to come back.

The bay area is on my short list of places I would move to. Has a lot to offer. The pros far outweigh the cons in my book. I make a point of visiting there every year if possible.
    Best wishes.

Don't worry about it. Take precautions, be prepared, insurance etc.
You can find tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, oppressive heat / humidity, flooding, urban decay / riots, etc all throughout this nation of ours.
Thankfully the really bad earthquakes are not to frequent.

The last notable quake we had in San Diego was Easter Sunday a few years ago. The epicenter was a 100 miles away in Mexico. Shook us for about a minute. Not to violent, but a steady roller. I jumped up from the couch and held the big screen TV. Got to save the TV! When it was over I went right back to my video game like nothing happened.

This state is a piece of shit. It's beautiful, but everything else about it fucking sucks. Full of assholes. I can't wait to leave.

Monterey is foggy as shit!! There is no nightlife. I have 3 friends who moved from SF to there and regret it every single day. On the other hand the fog burns off, and 17 mile drive is freaking killer....

If you had a choice, i couldn't recommend the Livermore Valley more highly - except for commuting south in the am and north in the pm.

I left SoCal about 9 years ago and hate to go back the couple of times a year when we have to go there. Traffic, taxes, Governor Moonbeam, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein, ridiculous housing prices, illegal aliens - what is there to like except the weather in SoCal? Nothing. It used to be paradise on earth, now it is hell.

I agree 100% with this, most of my friends that leave California can't wait to come back, and I also am from southern cal, San Diego to be exact, but I would move to the Bay area in a second if I found the right situation, as for the cost, usually if the cost of living is high the pay is also higher, trust me a person make more in the Bay area that does the same work as someone in say Milwaukee, if the new job pays enough and you think it will be fun I'd move in a second! course it would be hard for me to leave San Diego for anywhere but if they offered me enough I'd move to the bay area!

If I had FU money, that's where I'd be right now. Takes a lot just to live a middle class life there.

I live in the Bay Area. Monterey is great, beautiful weather and scenery. Cons are poor and congested roads due to heavy tourist traffic.
