...i just saw this story, im copy and pasting it so i can leave out the part about how the weather might effect election day. the good news (?) is this weather system is suppose to be farther north than the coast areas but in light of how hard everyone was hit in sandy i figure a heads up is worth it.

A nor'easter bound for New England may be brewing, and it could hit as early as Election Day, according to a preliminary forecast from the National Weather Service.
The preliminary extended forecast issued by the agency's Hydrometeorological Prediction Center (HPC) Thursday morning noted that the possible nor'easter will likely be "much less extreme" than Hurricane Sandy, and it would produce effects away from the regions hardest hit by the superstorm.
"At this time it looks as though coastal impacts would be farther north along the New England coast than we saw with Sandy. Snowfall would be confined to northern New England," the Weather Channel noted.

I have a feeling that this winter is going to be really bad. I'm dreading it.

...yesterday they thought it would happen farther north but if shit gets hammered up there it could effect the areas already hit in some way. i hope it goes north if it has to happen i dont guess theres much folks on the coast can do unless they can just get to vegas for a week.

Another kick in the balls. It kind of sucks to have snow dumped on you when you don't have any heat or electricity, much less a home...

I'm researching solar cell phone chargers, etc. now. There's no way in hell I'm getting caught off guard by a storm ever again. Folks will be coming to MY apartment for supplies, I'm going to be so prepared!

There's ways you can charge your phone with regular batteries, there's videos of it on Youtube. You can even steal power from phone lines (if they're working), enough to charge a phone or power a light. Also your car lighter can charge stuff if you have an adapter.

There's also ways you can get AC power from car batteries by using an inverter. I don't recommend that unless you know what you're doing, you could blow yourself up or get fried. :)

i wondered about those solar chargers: there wasn't a whole lot of sunlight around when people needed charges and had trouble finding electricity this past week so i don't think they would have helped. maybe one of those crank radio or crank chargers, or a propane fueled generator?

Look into wind turbines, though UV rays can go through clouds, it has been pretty much cloud cover outside since the storm hit. Of course that is probably better because if the sky is clear the temperature would drop even more at night be bad for people without power.

You can buy one of these Red Cross radios. It has a solar panel and a hand crank. It also has a light and a USB port so you can charge phones. I saw them at Best Buy for $70. I think I'm going to pick one up. It'd be nice to keep in my bike bag.

You'd have to be Gary the Retard (or Mike Gangi) to fuck that up. An inverter is just a small unit with a 9-volt plug that goes right into your car's lighter socket and the other end is a standard 110-volt AC outlet where you can plug in any ordinary electric device.
