US President Barack Obama had promised a "proportional" response, though officials would not comment on any US involvement in the current outages.

Analysts said technical problems or a cyber-attack could be to blame.

"For the past 24 hours North Korea's connectivity to the outside world has been progressively getting degraded to the point now that they are totally offline," said Doug Madory of internet analysis company Dyn Research.

Arbor Networks, an internet technology service, said it had detected denial-of-service attacks against North Korea's infrastructure beginning on Saturday.

It takes a serious botnet to shut down the Internet for an entire country.

North Korea barely has what we consider the internet.

"Taking it down" is hardly a challenge for even half ass hackers.

The launch of the new Warcraft was a disaster in part due to denial of service attacks. I'm not sure what that means, I just wanted to play my fucking game. It's ma faaavorite.

Lol ok. In that case... Still pretty cool, though. I think that's a first, shutting the internet down in another country.

In other news- Obama has hacked and taken control of Kin Jong Un's World of Warcraft account. The response was proportional.

It seems really juvenile to shut down internet service to North Korea.

That's our response? Ooooohhhhhh....we denied service to a country with no computers. That'll teach 'em.
