Now that the door has been opened to marriage beyond one man-one woman, the sky's the limit on new kinds of unions. Here is what I see coming down the pike over the next 10-20 years. Group marriages: Why should marriages stop at just two people? If three or four or ten people love each other, why should they have to choose one to marry? Why can't all of them take marriage vows for each other if they are all consenting adults? Its not exactly polygamy, because each person has more than one spouse. In polygamy, its usually only the man who has multiple wives, while the wives only have one husband each. Human-Animal marriages: This one's a little tricky because of the consent issue. I believe that the pro-bestiality group (they will obviously find some other, more acceptable name for bestiality) will eventually claim that animal psychologists are able to gauge an animal's affection for a particular human, and if that affection reaches a certain level, the psychologists will state that the animal is "consenting" to a closer physical relationship that a marriage will bring. This one might take a little longer but I do think its coming. Adult-child marriages: This one may take even longer, but with enough wearing down, it will happen too. The pro-NAMBLA types will claim that the "age of consent" is a fiction and that thanks to our permissive society, 10 year olds know what sex is. Thus, there is no reason why a 10 year old can't consent to marriage with an adult. They will claim that age of consent laws are "discriminatory" and prejudice the rights of children to make their own decisions about marriage. Think these sound crazy? They're not. Now that notions of "morality" and "nature" have been discarded and non-traditional unions are not only be allowed but are being celebrated, its only a matter of time before the above ideas are championed. You'll see.
