Reading the article, seems like there is 0.0 chance the government can prove they were stolen from the SF mint.

OTOH, I'm sure Unca Sam will be perfectly happy to take half in taxes

Utterly ridiculous. If this was government property, it was written off long, long ago and the aggrieved party/parties are long dead.

Besides, this was on their property!

Oh, I forgot. Your property is only your property until the U.S. government decides otherwise.

Ask the Native Americans about that. :coffee:

If they're smart, they should sell them and roll it into an IRA so the government can't take it.

...they tried to keep it quiet theyve had the coins for a year, it was the people they asked for evaluations that got so excited about the kinds of coins they had started talking. as it stands right now they cant prove it because there are no serial numbers but the rarity of certain coins make them likely property of the mint even today. theres no finders keepers in stolen property as was pointed out in the comments a guy recently got his covette bac that was stolen 40 years ago.

and the govt does have a shred of evidence to offer by way of a news paper report days after the robbery and the description of the coins mates in dollar value when adjusted for 100 years. the actual face value is the same, the coins missing in god we trust on them suggest either a mint coin or a collector in 1900. they know who was convicted of the crime and other suspects from the time that had been smuggling coins out of the mint for 3 years before they caught on. once the players are traced if there is any connection to the property where the couple found the coins the govt will probably come down with the heavy pimp hand.

Well as long as you don't ask them in writing. No written language and no wheel. They were savages who conquered land with force just as they were conquered. Funny how it only becomes a moral issue when whites do it.

:secret: ... you can only contribute up to $5,500 annually to an IRA if you're under age 50 or $6,500 if you're age 50 or older.

Ugh this is rediciouls. I had a similar issue about 3 years ago. I logged into my World of Warcraft account and ALL of my gold was gone. Turns out I was hacked :(

I swiftly contacted Blizzard Support and within a few hours I got my gold back :)

EVERYBODY has to try to be famous for 15 minutes. This was easy. Shut your trap, sell a couple every month, and enjoy the rest of your life w/o the rapacious Feds coming after you.

What genius decided to take the whole lot to get appraised at the same place?

they should have kept their mouths shut. Then, they should have bought themselves a little mac-hine & molded the gold down themselves in their basement. Make it into bars & then said the gold was in their family passed down for years.
they won't get out of paying taxes, but that will really suck if the govt takes the whole lot of it away.

...the gold is worth way more in coin form making gold bars out of it would seriously reduce the value. i think the people that found it did try to be careful but when they showed up with mint condition extremely rare coins for appraisal the numismatist community was all abuzz.
