The Mets expect some 5,000 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender fans to attend their LGBT Pride Night this season.
PORT ST. LUCIE — The Mets will hold an official LGBT-themed Pride Night this season, which they are touting as the first ever hosted by a major sports franchise in New York. The date will be announced at a news conference Tuesday at Queens Borough Hall featuring team officials, local politicians and LGBT Network CEO David Kilmnick.
This comes a year after Mets general manager Sandy Alderson invited former major leaguer Billy Bean, now Major League Baseball’s vice president for social responsibility and inclusion, to participate on the field in the Mets’ spring camp. At the time Alderson said it was important to him that the organization be proactive in baseball’s project to be more inclusive and welcoming to the LBGT community.

Officials estimated that more than 5,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender fans will be at Citi Field for the event.
“Bullying is still a major league problem for LGBT youth,” Kilmnick said in the news release announcing the event. “Over 82 percent report being verbally and physically harassed in the past year. It’s not only the school hallways where our young people report feeling unsafe, but also on the ball field. We are grateful and thankful to Major League Baseball for taking the lead in professional sports, including the LGBT community in its diversity priorities and initiatives. As a lifelong Mets fan, I am proud that the New York Mets are not only the defending National League Champions, but the champion of the New York sports world in making sure that everyone is welcomed and celebrated at Citi Field.”
Mets executive vice president Lou DePaoli said in the release: “New York is the most diverse and inclusive city in the world, and the Mets welcome all fans throughout the season. We are particularly proud to welcome the LGBT community on Pride Night at Citi Field.”

In the release, Bean added: “It makes me very proud to see their organization display such a powerful example of inclusion, and a message of acceptance for anyone who loves the game of baseball.”
The Mets are not the first MLB team to host such an event. Pride nights were held at Dodger Stadium and the Giants’
Asked about Jenrry Mejia, who last week became the first player banned for life under MLB’s current drug policy due to a third positive test for PEDs, Terry Collins seemed to have already moved past the shock.
“I am disappointed,” the manager said. “I agree with what most people said. Very, very disappointed, it was extremely bad judgement.”
Then he quickly shrugged it off.
“We'll pick it up and find somebody else to pitch in that spot.”

Spin control. The owners son, Jeffy (Paris) Wilpon, was sued because he supposedly made it very difficult for an ex-employee who was having an out of wedlock baby. They settled out of court.

But being a Mets fan, I admit the ridicule is well deserved.
