NYC Reaches $4.5M Settlement With Family of Akai Gurley
    By Shawn Setaro

New York City has agreed to pay more than $4 million to the family of Akai Gurley, an unarmed African American man killed by a police officer in a Brooklyn stairwell in 2014, in order to settle a wrongful death suit, reports the Daily News.

The bulk of the tab is being paid by the city itself and the city housing authority, known as NYCHA. Gurley was killed in the Louis H. Pink Houses, a public housing project. The wrongful death suit by Gurley's family accused NYCHA of contributing to Gurley's death by failing to repair a lightbulb in the stairwell where the shooting happened. A much smaller sum of $25,000 is being paid by Peter Liang, the officer who shot Gurley.

The money will be put in a fund for Gurley's daughter Akaila. It will be invested, and is expected to provide her with around $10 million over her lifetime.

Liang was convicted of manslaughter for his role in Gurley's death, but the judge in the case controversially sentenced him to community service and probation instead of jail time. Liang's then-partner Shaun Landau was kicked out of the NYPD in the wake of the shooting.

New York City has recently made several other multi-million dollar payouts to police shooting victims. Just over a year ago, the city paid $5.9 million to the family of Eric Garner, the Staten Island man who was put in a fatal chokehold by NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo in July, 2014. Several months prior, it awarded $3.9 million to the family of Ramarley Graham, an unarmed Bronx teen shot and killed by an NYPD officer in 2012.

Serious question...does anyone think the family would bring Gurley back if it meant they had to give up the money?

    Yeah, I didn't think so either...:shitcoffee:

Cops should be allowed to kill black people.

    Oh wait. They are.

a black man walking down the poorly lit steps with his girlfriend should be considered dangerous...why hesitate to question the perp when you have a right to kill

This poor guy way truly innocent. Yet the piece of shit Freddie Greys family gets over 6 million and not a single cop is found guilty.

In what world are people living on food stamps worth 4.2 million dollars? If courts did an honest accounting, Gurley's family would probably owe NYC money.

I hate the feeling that I am paying for the NYPD's low level fuckups. It never ends. If it's not a wrongful death it's a bunch of wrongful arrests and harassments. There's a case right now, a guy is suing because he video'd some cops on a sidewalk while they dealt with a homeless guy. This is perfectly legal but the cops got all hot under the collar and threw the guy in jail. The whole interaction was recorded, so boom there's another payout.

I know there's police-community relations problems everywhere right now but I can confirm that there is a serious trust issue with NYPD these days. Even respectable law-abiding citizens (yes including white people) fear them.

Reports of used syringes littering the streets of New York City surging

There's been a sharp increase in used syringes littering New York’s streets — at a time when the rate of fatal heroin overdoses is skyrocketing.

The number of complaints about loose needles lying around this year has jumped to 213 — about a 25% increase compared to the same period last year, city Department of Health records show.

“We caution New Yorkers against handling used syringes found on the street,” a department spokeman said.

Complaints about the loose syringes come as the Health Department reports that fatal heroin overdose rates have increased 158% over the last five years.
