Last Updated Oct 20, 2015 10:37 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- A New York police officer was rushed to the hospital after being shot in Harlem on Tuesday night, CBS New York reported.

The shooting happened around 9 p.m. near the Robert Wagner Houses at East 120th Street near FDR Drive.

Law enforcement sources told CBS New York police were investigating a report of shots fired when a foot chase ensued.

The sources told the station a male police officer was shot in the head and rushed to Harlem Hospital Center in critical condition.

At least one person is in custody, CBS New York reported. A gun was recovered at the scene of the shooting, police sources said.

The NYPD's 73rd Precinct identified the officer shot as being from the NYPD Housing Police Service Area 5 Anti-Crime Unit.

Police activity closed the FDR Drive in both directions between 120th and 125th streets. Authorities warned drivers to expect extensive delays and seek alternative routes if possible.

It's such a shithole that cabs and cops don't even want to go through there. Vile.

Update from Newsday - 2 minutes ago

NYPD housing officer in serious condition after being shot in the head in East Harlem, officials say
An NYPD plainclothes officer was shot in the head during a foot pursuit in East Harlem and is in serious condition, police said Tuesday night.

The 33-year-old Housing Police officer was taken to Harlem Hospital Center in serious condition, NYPD said.

Officials said the officer, assigned to PSA 5 in the Bronx, was shot while pursuing a man with a gun from 103rd Street and FDR Drive

Police recovered two firearms -- a semiautomatic handgun and a revolver -- at 120th Street and FDR Drive, officials said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio was en route to the hospital Tuesday night.

In a tweet posted at about 10:30 p.m., de Blasio said "Will update soon from Harlem Hospital. New Yorkers, please keep the @NYPDNEWS Officer who was shot on duty tonight in your thoughts."

Law enforcement officials said a man was taken to Cornell Weill Medical Center in Manhattan with a gunshot wound shortly after the officer was shot, and police consider him a possible suspect in the officer's shooting.

Just before 11 p.m. Tuesday night, dozens of NYPD officers, both uniformed and plainclothes, gathered at the Harlem hospital waiting for an update on the wounded officer's condition.

Late Tuesday night, traffic on both sides of FDR Drive remained at a halt. The NYPD closed FDR Drive from 96th Street to 125th Street to investigate the shooting.

In early September, NYPD officers pursuing a shooting suspect shot and wounded the man after police said he turned and fired "multiple" shots at them, striking a police vehicle in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn.

None of the NYPD officers involved were wounded by gunfire, though six were taken to hospitals to be treated for tinnitus, police said.

In May, NYPD Officer Brian Moore, 25, of Massapequa, was shot in the head as he and a partner patrolled in Queens Village. Moore died two days later and Demetrius Blackwell, of Queens Village, was charged with the Plainedge High School graduate's killing.

    ...........
When officers arrived on the scene, the warring groups split up and scattered, with one suspect robbing a bicycle at gunpoint.

That gunman led cops on a chase up First Avenue and then over a footbridge at 120th Street and the FDR Drive.

The suspect made it over to the East River side of the bridge and shot back at cops, and Holder was fatally struck in the forehead, the sources said.

Police sources identified the shooting suspect as Tyrone Howard, 30. He has not been charged yet.
