Deep-fried Thanksgiving? Meet the NY State Fair's over-the-top treat for 2016

Remember The Defibrillator, the 2015 New York State Fair's over-the-top deep-fried burger served between two grilled cheese sandwiches?

[IMG]The New York Harvester is the newest over-the-top State Fair creation from Jim Hasbrouck of the Fried Specialties stand. Hasbrouck is the man behind the Defibrillator burger of 2015. The Harvester is essentially a deep-fried Thanksgiving dinner sandwich -- with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cheese, bacon and cranberry sauce between two slices of butter-drenched sourdough bread. A gravy dipping sauce is included.N. Scott Trimble
Or perhaps the TwinX, a Twix candy bar, stuffed inside a deep-fried Twinkie and wrapped in bacon? It was the the deep-fried toast of the 2014 State Fair.

Both were created by Jim Hasbrouck of the Fried Specialties stand. In recent years, Hasbrouck has spent the winter months at his home in Marion, Wayne County, dreaming up the next big gut-buster to serve his State Fair customers.

This year, it's a whole Thanksgiving dinner, from the turkey to the cranberry sauce. Parts are deep fried, of course. That includes the turkey breast, mashed potatoes and stuffing. There's also some deep fried bacon added, just for fun. Then most of it is grilled on a flat-top. Then it's all piled high between two pieces of sourdough bread and served with a side of gravy.

It's called the New York Harvester. It weighs about three pounds. (You probably could gain that much weight just by looking at it).

"It's a taste of Thanksgiving in every bite," says Hasbrouck, who earned his fame at the State Fair with his "You Bring It, We Fry It" motto and his annual signature food monstrosity.

Deep-fried fame is catching up to Hasbrouck. The health department no longer allows him to fry anything patrons bring to his stand, as he did for the past few years. He had to battle candy-maker Mars Inc. over his use of the word "TwinX" and its brand names.

On the other hand, his reputation allowed him to add a second location for Fried Specialties last year, and this year he'll grow to three locations. One of those will be in 20-foot by 20-foot tent, which is where you'll find the New York Harvester, the return of the Defribillator and other mega-sandwiches. The Fair has not yet chosen a location for that tent.

The other two Fried Specialties locations -- the original spot on Restaurant Row near the horse coliseum and the newer one near Kiddieland and the Midway -- will serve all the standard deep-fried goodies, but not the big sandwiches. "I need the room to make those, and the tent is going to be perfect," Hasbrouck said.

He's still perfecting the New York Harvester, so he and his team will be able to crank out thousands of them during the 12-day run of the fair, Aug. 25 to Sept. 5.

And Hasbrouck is already thinking of 2017.

"Wait until you see what we have for next year," he said.

Here! The Big E Burger (at "New England's State Fair" in West Springfield, Massachusetts ) is of the same genre. I have been plenty hammered there, but never wasted enough to order a bacon cheeseburger with donuts for a bun. It is the best fair ever though, with many great food choices.
