An elderly Arlington woman might very well owe her life to an off-duty police officer and neighbor who rushed into her home Tuesday afternoon as it erupted in flames.

The two-alarm fire on Webster Street started shortly before 6 p.m. in the back of the house.

Arlington K-9 police officer Michael Hogan happened to be riding by on his bike and spotted the smoke.

"You could hear the crackling in the back. The whole back of the house was really roaring," said Hogan.

He and a neighbor forced open the door to the first floor, grabbed the woman and carried her outside before the flames and smoke overwhelmed her.
