Do you think anything I said here could be construed as offensive? Inspired by the recent passing of Prince, my friend and I were discussing events that shook the world, things that you remember where you were when you heard the news, etc. The Kennedy Assassination was one. I made the analogy that 9/11 was a similar benchmark for those not around or too young to remember Kennedy. People remember where they were when they heard about it, day to day life was interrupted for days, there was grief and mourning, and in an instant the events that transpired made life feel like it shifted in a new way. She responded with stony silence at first, then admonished me like I was a small, ignorant child. She said in a patronizing tone, "Please don't ever say that to anyone else out of this conversation. It is ignorant to even compare anything to 9/11 . And it is still too new and hurtful and you will offend a lot of people." I was not sure what angle was offending her, so I went with explaining that I was not saying the loss of a president's life equaled the loss of thousands. I was referring to the responses and effect of the events themselves on the public. Her curt response was "Don't even try to explain it to me and you have no reason to act all hurt at me over this. Just don't ever say it again because you are really going to upset a lot of people."
