A Fairfield, Ohio teacher faces the prospect of dismissal after being suspended on December 23 for reportedly making a racially charged comment to an African-American student. On December 3, science teacher Gil Voigt allegedly told the student "we don't need another black president" after the teen said he would like to be president one day.

Several of the student's classmates at the Fairfield Freshman School confirmed Voigt made the comment, and after a complaint by the student's parents the teen was removed from Voigt's classroom. Two days before Christmas the Fairfield Board of Education suspended Voigt without pay, the first step in terminating a teacher.
Voigt denied the allegation and shifted blame on the student:

    • [*=center]
Superintendent Paul Otten said Voigt has been reprimanded for insensitive comments in the past. A report prepared relating to the December 3 incident listed four other incidents against Voigt, including warnings for "an inappropriate racial comment" in April 2008 and further "inappropriate comments to students" in December 2013. Otten express dismay over the situation:

Teachers should leave their political opinions to themselves when they are in the class room. They are there to teach children facts and skills, not stand up on their soap box.

The teacher was an idiot or there is more to this. I do remember in the late 1970's, early '80's listening to an Asst Superintendent and school board members making enwurd jokes and saying how lucky we were to only have 1 in the district. Of course this was over some booze, blow and poker for a weekend in a private setting.

He won't lose his job after all is said and done, he didn't say a racial slur. Was it dumb to say? of course, he had past racial comments so that's all he knows.

A teacher making racist comments to a student in a public school is a "freedom of speech" issue? What fucking delusional FoxNews fueled planet are you living on?

Ha. tell that to the teacher's union, who send so much money to the democrats that they're their biggest source of funds... or the college professors who are stuck in their 20's pretending its still 1969.

It's not a freedom of speech issue. By that line of thinking for example, a black militant teacher could tell his class all whites are descendents of the devil. That may be his true belief but teaching is not a forum for teachers to use their "freedom of speech", they're there to do a specific job. Imagine a Chinese person going for a driver's test at the Motor Vehicle Agency and the driving instructor tells him, "You Asians are horrible drivers and shouldn't be allowed on the roads!" Again, even if the instructor has had personal experiences to make him feel that way he could and should legally be fired for making such an inappropriate remark. It's a question of common sense, and considering the teacher has a history of complaints like this he obviously doesn't have any.

EDIT: Sorry Willowglen, your post wasn't up yet when I began typing my response and I see you are basically making the same point. (Great minds, and all that….)

There it is.. If you disagree with anything a liberal says, it must be because of Fox News...... Keep getting your intel from Jonathon "the wigwearer" Liebowitz on Comedy Central.

I was just about to say that. Its way worse on the liberal side of course, but this comment while wrong, will be the one that receives media attention.

It's not a freedom of speech issue. What this teacher said was wrong, not because he isn't entitled to his opinion, but in that forum what he said is outside his job description. But I assume you'd agree that a teacher or professor should not be making left leaning editorial comments either?
