i'm originally from the vampire state but fled to Arizona 15 yrs ago knowing what i was in for if i stayed there.
    Outrageous home prices
    Insane property taxes
    Too many firearm regs
My sister pays about 14,000 a year in property taxes ( baldwin LI) and a good friend pays 16,000 in
    mahopac.
I almost passed out when i heard this...... Give us your bad news and vent a bit!
Wonder how much Howard forks over every year! He often comments on the insane taxes he pays.

Meh. California here. Taxes are crazy; but then when I watch what happened to property prices in Nevada versus what has happened here, I'm staying. The Wall Street Journal predicted mass migration after the Dems/Brown took over, but all I know is CalTrain and BART are operating at capacity and my condo is worth 200K more than I paid for it back in 2009. Oh, and unlike NV and AZ, we don't have to deal with the religious kooks that are part and parcel of state politics these days. So if this is financial hell, please give me more of it.

For the first time in my career, I worked outside of NY State -- 2014 in Florida.

When I saw my first paycheck the amount was so high I thought it was a mistake; turns out it's the difference in state taxes (0 for FL). F that noise.

$4K taxes for a one-bedroom co-op!! Got transferred back last year, am looking to flee Long Island for good (highest tax rate IN THE U.S.) by the end of 2016.

My parents and sister got the fuck out of New York and moved down to Florida. They all love it down there and much cheaper. I am working on finding a job and making the move down

Coming from jersey I felt like I was robbing a bank

You are paying for the schools systems Northeast. If you have a smart kid anywhere else, the schools suck and you need to pay big $$ for private schools?

Fuck New York. Shit is overrated. Manhattan is a joke and loves itself WAY too fucking much. CA is far better. And the women are hotter.

I lived on long island for 25yrs.......there's nothing there that is worth 10- 15,000 a year in taxes for an average home.
    Absolutely nothing.

True....florida is the receptical tip of the United States. If its fucked up...it ends up in florida.
But thats why so many celebs and sports players " own " a home there.
    No state taxes.

Texas, nevada and arizona are taking in the smart people and big businesses from ny, cali and the midwest that are fed up.

I did the same thing a year ago.....Sold my house up there {$10k a year taxes}, bought one for cash {$2k a year taxes}, better weather, 0 state taxes, less traffic, not a pothole in the state...

Live a mile from the ocean, try to fish 3 mornings a week, work part time out of my house and love every second of it compared to the rat race in NY

I'm always puzzled when I hear "school system sucks".....Does that mean the rest of the country schools are pumping out dummies?

    Exactly.

I'm creeping up on 10k for what is essentially a teardown in NJ but both my kids tested in to two of the best high schools in the US, all paid for with state taxes.

In a handful of years I'm dumping everything and spending the rest of my life fishing in Florida.

The schools in the Northeast are town based not county based. The class sizes are smaller, the teachers are paid better and the kids are better prepared to go to college. My nephew went to school in NC, his high school didn't even offer AP or calculus classes so he had to take them online. The parents in the Northeast are also focused more on getting their kids into the elite colleges so they push the schools to be better.

I laugh when parents of schools age kids complain about the in taxes in NJ, MA or NY. I say to them - would you rather be paying private school tuition for EACH of your kids per year?
